'Desperado Captured Thought to be Caes&r Wooten. Capt. Jas. S. Lane of Stonewall came up yesterday and reports the capture of a desperate fellow, a colored man and a stranger on Satuiday last. He staid on Friday night with Prince Webb, col ored and stole from him goods and money. On Saturday morning Webb pursued him in the direction of New Berne, Justice N. O. Brinson and Mr Barrington accompanying him. He was overtaken at Edmund Simons house within about a mile of Craven county line. He had two pistols on bis person and when ihe o9oer ordered him under arrest and had taken one of the pistols from him he dashed off and escaped for the time, He was headed off however at Pcttipher's ftrry oppo site New Berne and just as the ferry man had started out with bim the posse came up and captured him and took bim back to Pamlico jail. He given bis name as Sampson Smith; say he has never been inTarboro, Wilson or Golds- boro, yet be bad papers on his person with the names of several gentlemen of these towns on them. It it announced that "a preliminary contract has been entered into between the Baltimore And Ohio Company and syndicate of English and American bankers to supply the oompaDy with $10,000,000 to pay off a floating indebt edness of 87, 000,000 and for other pur poses on certain conditions that are specified. One of those conditions is that the management of the Baltimore and Ohio properties ahall be placed "in competent hands satisfactory to the syndicate." All the friends of the li. and O. system, it may be observed, will be glad to Bee the management in bands of the competency of whioh all the parties in interest are satisfied. The syndicate ia but providing for the secur ity of its loan of 1 5,000,000 at S per cent and of it investment of $5,000,000 in preferred stock when it insists that the company's affairs ehalt be managed hereafter in a way they can approve. It is their duty to look after their inter est, and they may be depended upon to do so. Their large investment in U. and O. securities will naturally tend to make them desire to promote its pros perity. In this labor they may expect the co-operation of others, not members of the syndicate, whose holdings of stocks and bonds of the road lead them to faror the same end. Baltimore and Maryland have large interests in the B. and O. properties, which interests will need to be considered, the saorifice of the oity and State in behalf of the com pany entitling them to large influence upon it policy. The large commercial interest our people have in Its success will oause them to favor any change of management that will make it a more efficient aid in the development of Bal timore trade. It is hardly conceivable that too interests of the syndicate would lead to the suppression of the advantage In rates which Baltimore's geographical position has given her. To prevent ir rational "war," by contract or other wise, will be a (tronj point gained. Our peoplewould expect that in the common interest tV" Baltimore and Ohio, both by the vl - f d person selected at the desire . ' n hct to manage' it and by tl. . ,:on,nts it may njake, will be left free to take special care of the interests of Baltimore and of the Statefof Maryland. Baltimore Sun. Free Trade. We re spectfully ask that the committee be continued to the final settlement which we hope to make at tbe October meet ing. The delay in making a final re port is not owing to any neglect on the part of the committee as we have been prepared for tbe past ten davs to go into the investigation of tbe said schedule B tax, and from our examination we could now report but we do not wish to do M. Kdjtor JorRNAI.: Again we ask more space in your valuable paper to recount what has transpired w ith us since our last letter. On Tuesday morning the sun shone in clear and resplendent rays upon the loveliest scenery that North Carolina cah boast of, and we, anxious to spend this beaut tful day in a stroll amongst nature's grandest work, a party was soon formed and immediately walking sticks, lunch, snakemedicice and cup. we were off. Our party consisted of Mies Planner, Miss Carraway, Mr. Beh rends, Masters Tom and James Carra way, Jim Holton and our guide. We walked for one hour and a half in a ravine through which ran a small creek bo very badly crooked that yon ooula hardly tell which was uper down; we forded it some seven or eight times, some bne falling la and making a tough ing spectacle1 for the remainder of ns. This entire walk was through a thick forest of giant trees, some of them at least fifteen feet in circumferenoe. This wespU in sailing. At last the base of the Blue Ridge is reached. The ascent is begun. Climb, climb and climb, sometimes going for two hundred yards and looking back you see the pathway just beneath us not more than forty feet. How d isoouraging, and especially when one is very tired. At last all are safely landed upon the top. , A rush is made for ths spring, but the wood are full of whortleberries and we fall to dsvoorinJt thit luscious fruit with the greatest possible speed, moving on all the while with bushes in our bends un til the cold and sparkling -water it reached, t How pure, "cold and refresh- lag I this mountain draught.
