We are pleased to be able to examine the third edition of this valuable work, which has just been issued by the author, George Allen of our city. This edition contains forty pages of new muter, making 130 pages of closely printed practical teaching on a most important subject. we cannot do better than to quote from the opinion of one of our moat es teemed educators,, Dr. Richard U Lewie of Eanaton College. He says 'This book is complete You can do no more to it. The examples and model entries are just what we needed. The mechanical execution, paper and print are auperb. The educational world should thank you for this invaluable book." We can only add that we are gratified to see such a handsome book issued from a North Carolina press. Steamer Movements. The Education of the Hand, The introduction of drawing as a branch of study in the New Berne High School Is a step In the right direction. Miss Maoe of this olty will also instruct a private class in this industrial art, and it is to be beped that our citizens ill give it that consideration It de serves. The commute on industrial Education appointed by the American Institute of instruction in their report to the joint meeting of the Institute and National Educational Association, held at Saratoga, Jnly lath, 1888, recom mended the teaching of drawing, "not as an accomplishment, but as language fo.r the graphic presentation of the facts of form and of matter; for the presentation of the appearanoe of objects, and also as a means of developing taste In industrial design." In other words, It is simply manual training for the girls. It is n accessary that they should be taught habits of industry; that their hands should be trained, a skilled hand being about as important as a filled head. We hope to see the teaching of this useful art brought Into requisition and receive such an impetus in New Berne this year that eyery high school will necessarily have to embraoe it.
