The citizens of Goldeboro, Kinston and Beaufort have held meetings and appointed strong delegations to go to Raleigh with the committee from New Berne to present the question of ei ten sion of the A. & N. C. R. to the Gover nor. Pamlico county ought also to send a delegation. Next Wednesday has been set apart as the day to go, and it being Fair week the con of going will be but little and those going can take in the Fair also But let it be under stood that the primary object of their visit is to present ibis matter to the Governor and show him the advantages to be derived by this section and the State at large by this extension. Major Deruiiaon'a Gin House on Fir. A spark from the emuke Black fired the roof of Major Dennison's large and extensive gin bouse near the railroad bridge yetsleiday about noon, iuick work on the part of the Major and hie forces and the lire department saved a large amount of machinery, cotton and cotton seed from destruction. A the emoke puffed from the roof of the large frame building many remarked, "the Major is gone this time,"' but they had forgotten the efficiency and daring of our fire department, which armed in good time and made a quick and preity job of stopping the lire. The building, stock and machinery wero damaged probably to the extent of one thousand dollars. Hut notwiih- eianuing mis mo Major hail Lh gins running again in leas lhan two h urt. The Oyster Fan. Our friend Malt icks, of ( low cony ty, who has studied the oyster business considerably, don't think we could get up an 05 ster fair that would be of much advantage. Furthermore he says, or intimates that the oyster lands are about all taken up in his section. The fact that these lands are being rapidly taken up ia the very reason we ought to hare the fair and encourage the improving of the gardens. Many oyster farms have been "laid out, " but, if we have been correctly informed, "laying out," or entering, is about all that ia done. Home few in every st o' lion of the oyster lands have improved their oyster gardens, and we wunt them to come together and exhibit'the pro ducts of their labor in this line and encourage others to improve their gar dens. If we have the Fair we know that Winberry will have a good sample of his oysters here and his methods of planting and cultivating would be sought after. A Bobs Deer Slayer. Detnpsey Harper, a former typo of the Journal office, now a farmer near Piney Grove, Jones county, paid us a visit yesterday. When asked by the boys why he did not bring them a quarter of deer he replied that he could have dono so if he had only thought of it. as he killed one only a day or two ago. A good story is told on Dempsey as a deer hunter, and we have it from a source that just I flea us in vouching for its truthfulness. Sometime ago'lie and an older brother went to Catfish lake a few miles from Polloksville on a fishing expedition, and after arriving at the lake ooncluded to stay all night. They went to work to secure material for fire when a large buck jumped out of hie resting plaoe and plunged into the lake. But the waves of the lake were so strong, there being a strong breeza, the buck could make no headway In cross ing. Quick as thought they rolled a log into the' lake and Dempsey jumped astraddle of it with a pole in hand and his knife sticking in the log started for the deer. When near him he began a circuit and srot the buck going round. trying to keep his head in the direction of his assailant. In .making the circuit Dempsey drew nearer and nearer until he oould reach the buck with his pole and then gave him a heavy blow on the head forcing it alder water, and when he raised it Dempsey was near enough to seize him by the horns, draw his head across the log and cut his throat. , At another time Dempsey w as at work on the farm when he heard the hounds trailing a deet. In a few minutes a good sise buck rushed out of. the woods near him and jumped into the ditch. Dempsey sailed on ,JiIm and he ran down the ditch Until reaching a pool of water and mired down with bis rider. Then.Dempsey shoved the back's head down In the water, out with his knife and cut his throat. x ' ' - Dempsey stands over six. feet In his stockings and no live deer escapes him, gun or no gan. a s; - - . - . ; ; i :S:jik SteamsMn. ;i j ' Say am ah, Ga., Oct, 18.-At "one o'clock" this morning fire "broke out in the cargo of the British steamship Hugh Lenden, loading for Liverpool. H'lt.N'Al.- I ltailroml- iw Co , ( let ',' see from ihe anxious in tela Jul k.n A L that you are lion to an oyster fair, and I think It but fair toward you thai I show you Borne of the ineide fueling of the mailer from my standpoint, which of course you are not expected to Bee. In the first stages of oy ster culture it ih right and economy to lirst gather up the wild product as long as it can be reachsd. This is actually no cultivation at all. H is as good and no better than has been practised for a number of years. As yet we have large increase in quantity but not in quality. This comparatively wild slock will compare badly with the well bred, con sequently much expected and nothing realized that can be shown at a fair. This is not all. I have been dividing oyeter lands into farms everyday since the coming in of the law, with in creased demand beyond the ability to Gil, and there is no desire in this section just now to advertise for occupants from afar off. Then again in the Pamlico, Lieutenant Winslow is ready to show parties every advantage scientific and otherwise where all the circumstances can be weighed on the spot. Of course it would not be interesting to take the wild stock of the Pamlico and show them at New Berne or elsewhere. I think that the same circumstances whioh influence ua in New river have their effect to aome extent in other oys ter localities. We would help you very poorly and at great, disadvantage this winter with a fair. I am delighted at the interest you take in the oyster industry and rejoice at the many ways you come at our peo ple to constrain them to build the rail road; hope you will continue your activ ity until all is accomplished.
