The following is from the, (jruldebt. ru Argu3 of the 14th inst "We Kreally fear that or frienJo in and around New Berne are too much Klven to politics. They are determined to have an extension of the A. & N. C. K. K and in order to get it they are talking about nominating and electing a Governor on that platform. We are equal ly anxious to have the road extended but we do not want to run a candidate on a platform of mat sort und with but that one plank in it The truth of the matter it that if we can show to the present ( Jovernor or to any other man likely to be Governor that it will be an apvanlae to the Slate or to anv oon slderable portion of it to extend ibe A & N C. li K he w ill lend ub all the aid in his power. Tins is the reasonable and e belieie the sensible view of the siluatiou. Argument will discount threats any day with a brave arid sen sible man We have sutluient reasons for believing in the necessity for the extension of the A. A N. ('., and we doubt not that the le will appear suf ficient to our present excellent Gov ernor. We ran conceive of but one reason against the proposition which I would be likely to hae any weight with the Governor, and that is that the building of :i road frmn here to h ayette - ! ville or S inf'ird might lesfen the value ' of the Slate's interest in iheN. C. U. K. 1 between this point and Greensboro That is a fact In the case which the Governor will consider, and H Is well for us lit once to fa' : this fact and fortify ourselves with substantial argu nients against it. We ask our New Berne fiiiinln to droti politics awhile arid j mi us in combatting from a bun Hess standpoint tin fallacy of this ob jection. To meet objections like this icquires aiginncnl. not passion nor threats of polui al damnation. We. theiefoie. hsk our ulued conteinpo rury. the New Kerne J"! UNAI.. to '.n arguuo nt against th. sou ndm-M t f the objection . The propositi' n now h simply to ex tend the A V N.C li to some point on the C I- Y . Y. I: 13 not to. make some 1I1 position id ine road at all . and if lb" Gove rrmr or any one else affirms that siii h extension will lessen the I vatu of the Slates interest 111 theN. C K . it devolves inon hini or whoever all: 1 111 sin li a proposition to show it But admit for the sake of argument that H is the ullimalu object of the ad vocates of this extension to have the C I . iV V. V. control the A. A N C. K either by lease or purchase, what then? Is tlm Slate's interest ill the N. C. K depreciated ? Not at all. On the other hand it will be appreciate! .be cause the C F. .V V. V. would then b in a position to bid for the N. C. R when the lease of the K. ,V I), expires. Besides, we doubt not that the C. 1. A V. V. 111 a lease or purchase of the Stale s interest in the A. ct N. C. K would bo perfectly willing to give a guarantee of an outlet to the N. C. K on fair and equilable terms, in the event that it is not re leased to the li. A 1) By this arrangement there, would be a fuluro for M irehi ad City as bright and promising; as Dr. Caldwell ever dreamed of, in that it would become the ocean outlet for two great lines of railway extending through the State from EaBt to West and Southwest, and from the Southeast to Northwest, By this ex tension, U10 probabilities of enhancing the Slate's interest in the N. C. li. are much stronger than the chances of de preciating it. As to the political aspect of the matter which the Argus directs attention to, it may be right in suggesting that our people are too much given to politics. But we once heard a prominent citizen of New Berne say there is more or less politics in everything, even in the pur chase of a cooking stove, for, said he, there is political economy in it If noth ing else." We have watched tha grow ing towns in North Carolina, and we have watched the favors bestowed upoD them by the powers that be. Our peo ple have been patient and long suffer ing under many acts of gross injustice prompted in some instances by selfish and political motives. Under a Repub lican administration, aided and encour aged by a few, interested Democrats, the N. C. Railroad was leased to a corpora tion whose interests were foreign to Eastern Carolina, and the State 'a inter est, that of tha private stockholders and people of this section, , in the A. & N. C. R. was not consid ered for a moment. As soon as the N. C. R. passed into the hands of this cor poration a change of guage was made and the people of this section absolutely denied the right of any business connec tion with the people beyond Goldsboro. Oar corn trade which amounted to near a half million of dollars annually was almost entirely diverted,' for so dealer oould afford to ship earn to any point on the N. C. R. atthe expense of trans fer at Goldsboro and pay the rates de manded by. the B. & D. When, the A. A N. C. R. went into the hands of W.J. Best and be began an extension, be se cured a favorable rate on corn over the R. & D. and New Berne began rapidly to regain her corn trade. Bat no sooner had Beet failed in his project and retired from the field than the old embargo on corn via the. A & N. C. R. was reestab I' ! ?1. Our friend, the Areas, will no bee lhal it u not a mutter uf politic ' with un but one of dollars and cente lbs ihiog that ia apt to make commuti lies, as well as individuals, cqueal. Now let us see if the Argus hasn t got as much politics in this matter as the people of New Btrne. Here are the candidates for the nomination for Gov ernor all standing on the I icmocratic platform, the planks are all in the plat form and they all stand solidly upon it In looking ovtr the number the Argus sees one who. while loving his whole State and wuuld endeavor to do Lis whole duly towar Is every section has a kindly feeling for Gjldsbjro and is anxious to see ber put upon the road to prosperity, not at the expense of other towns but simply by seeing that justice is done her . others on the same platform are for tht-ir sections of the Stale even though they would have to make a foot ball of Gold s burn, t nder these 1 ire u 1 .1 stances we unhesitatingly sky that the Argus would go for the Goldsboro man. A lighted buoy will be placed on the shoals oil the point as early us practicable. The officer also wnt.s liiat for two years an appropriation lias been askeil of Congress for tlm purpose i f ion structing a new light station, hut none has as yet been made. Hon. K. M. Simmons w ill have an op portuuily of assisting; our people in tins matter. Il is important that the light should be re-established at unco, and now ones made. Had there been a light al Wilk inson 's l'oint the steamer Annie would not have gone ashore in the blow of last August. The expense of gettin;; her off was very consider able and had to be borne simply because Congress has not done its duty for the encouragement of commerce. This is a matter that afTects Major Latham's dis trict as well as Mr. Simmons', and we are certain tho two will secure the necessary appropriations for I'amlico and NeuBe river lights.
