Railroad meeting Friday night.
The definition of a kiss appear again
today. It was set by a boy ami n-r
looked by the proof reader, and u botch
was the consequence. That boy will
never know what a kifs is if h don t do
better.
Owing to the disagreeable wi-a h r
the meeting to consider the inslow
railroad was not very largely attended
last night. Another meeting is called
for Friday night, when it is hoped a
large number will be present.
The weather went back on the l.atterri
Carolina Fair yesterday and give our
friends of Ooldsboro a rainy day for
Opening. We hope for better weather
today and that a large number of our
people will visit the Fair. The rates
over the A. & N. C. R. have been so re
duced that the cost of attending w ill he
very little.
lire. Ooodale is expected to arm e this
evening. She will be the guest of Mrs
George Allen, President of the New
Berne branohof the Woman's Christian
Temperance Union, liar lecture will
be delivered on Friday night in the
theatre. The members of this union
and all ladies who are interested in the
temperance work are invited to meet
tin. Ooodale at 4 o'clock Friday afler
fldoh in the lecture room of the Presby
terian church.
" "D. B. Walker" is eviiently in a
Hungarian settlement. He sen 4s us a
paper published at Pittsburg, Pa., in
the Slavonic language. It may contain
an account of the arrest of some negli
gent postmaster in which "Walker"
acted a prominent part; we are unable
to tell what it does oontain, and will
keep it until the pleasant countenance
of "Walker" smiles upon us. We think
the letters are put together somewhat
like a communication we once received
and "Walker," who was fortunately
prefect, was the only man who could
read it.
Send Another Invitation.
TheN. C Conference of the M. E.
' Church Sooth wilt convene at Fayette
' Till on the 80th of November. Bishop
" V Key of Georgia will preside.
At the last annual Conference the
Ohurch at New Berne extended an in-
Titation, and it only lacked a few votes
of being accepted. If an invitation is
extended this year It will in all proba-
r bility be ftooepted. It has been seven --teen
yeara since this body assembled in
New Berne. It is perhaps the largest
representative body of Christians that
oonvenes once a year.
Out Methodist brethren would doubt
. , less receire the nearty. co-operation of
- all our citiaens in their efforts to enter
';" tain this body, and w hope therefore
- an earnest Invitation will be extended.
New Berne need visitors; we want
v Jf ople t oome and see u and carry the
- H)wsish .them abroad that the old
-" town is not dead, but fully alive and
- growing better as well as older.". Invite
the Conference and our farmers will

Mr. John Long being called upon ad

1.1 ITOli Ji'lUNA. I have- be-fore' me
your artn le of Sunday last on the return
of the delegates from UalcLh. in which
you say the Governor intends to turn
the State- over to his successor as he re
ceived it. We beg leave to differ with
you. If you had been one of the com
mittee you would have been convinced
that the Governor has a policy for this
road, or to speak plainer, tbrre is a deal
on foot to turn this road oyer to the
W. & W . as soon as it is newly ironed to
Goldaboro. Do not understand that the
Governor said it in se many words, but
from hearing him express himself as
fully as he did, the writer came lo thai
conclusion, and other members of the
committee weroof the same opinion.
The Governor would not slate what
disposition he proposes to make of this
road, which is proof positive to the
writer he fears, and to make it stronger,
knows, this disposition he proposes lo
make will not suit the parties along the
line of the road, nor will it be to the
advantage of the county stock. You
say his predecessor never extended the
road, etc., and why should he? The
writer should think any Governor of a
State would like for historians, when
they come to chronicle the time he was
Governor, to be able to point to one act
that was of good to the Stale, or some
section, and not be compelled to simply
state: 'Governor was elected in ly4,
was inaugurated and served his
term." You suggest that the people
remain Quiet until the next election.
This is a matter we can not let rest.
The future of this city and the welfare
of all the counties bordering on both
sounds, depend on this extension. We
are completely shut off at this time by
the R. & D. aDd W. & W. at Ooldsboro.
We can not expect any prosperity aa
long as this condition remains, and if
the Oovernor can turn us over to the
W. & W. they will use us as a feeder
and nothing more. We should agitate
this question in and out of season, and
keep hammering until we succeed, and
if we can not accomplish the connection
before tho ooming election, we should
know if the future Oovernor favors our
proposition. We can not afford to take
chances again, as the railroads of the
State have become so powerful that the
Governors fear to go contrary to their
wishes, especially if they wish to Irjo to
Congress from distriots through which
the associate railroad runs.
