Tbe proprietors, Messrs. M. Patterson & Son, -re making an earnest endeavor that no further complaints shall be made U to hotel accommodations in New Berne. In this they are admirably suc ceeding. The services in the Methodist church in this oity Sunday were more than of ordinary interest. After tbe sermon by the pastor, Rev. L. W. Crawford, - the ordinance of baptism was adminis tered end fifteen persons united with the church by letter and on profession of faith. A Cool Wave. A northerly wind Sunday night brought on a cold wave that made fires sad overooats quite comfortable throughout Monday end in the evening news came of considerable snow fall at Goldsboro, Smithfleld and other points. -Later a few flakes fell here. :The Onslow Hailroad. A corespondent elsewhere shows that a railroad to Onslow county will pay. We may be mistaken but it strikes us that it will give a new outlet for corn that will enable New Berne to regain a large pari of "her corn trade from the ' northeast oountiee. There is more for the road in carrying corn than cotton from Onslow county. The cotton trade of Onslow will be but a email part of the traffic. . Kan Drowned. While deeply interested in and plan- ing for railroads our p.ople should not 3. be neglectful of the great need of man ufaoturing industries. There are vari ous kinds besides those for making cot ton fabrics which migbt be put in op eration to work up our crude material and give employment to tbe many peo ple who are not regularly employed. Below we copy from tbe Wadesboro Messenger an account of one of these industries that le about to be established at Wadesboro "Last week our town was entiled by the report that an opportunity w as of fered for Wadesboro to have a silk fac tory. Everybody listened, but few be lieved the story. Buriness men chuckled, and beautiful women smiled incredulously. But soon it was ascer tained that Mr. John 1. Patrick was in town accompanied by several strangers whose every motion indicated business. They Beetned to be looking for some thing. What was it' A Wadeeboio busineBB man, ready lo put his shoulder to the car of enterprise. They found Mr. George W. Huntley, and then something happened fur a (art. The strangers proved lw be Messrs. Singleton, Rose and Murray, of Pateraou, New Jersey, who were looking for a Southern town in which lo establish silk factory. At the request of Mr. 1'atrick they had coiue lo Wadesboro. were pleased, and had selected Cair o Mount ax the site of their Southern factory provided satis factory, arrangements could be made An informal business meeting was held, at which propositions ware made, dis cussed and accepted We cannot give all the details, hut w e ale assured that all the machinery will be hereby the k!flh of ueil i ehruary Steamer Mc ve.ni nts Tbe Kaglel of the I l'. The Vesper of this line will arilvi- today an I sail tins e run The e w he! ne r I r 1 1 v illi it i sailed for aru of 1 1 1 -r Norfolk hand ise. mil n I'm : '1 lie question is, w ill a rati road from hereto Washington connecting wilhu railroad from hereto Onslow county, which in turn will connect with a rail load to be built from there lo Wiliiim; Inn, ben lit New Berne and Craven con nty - Leave out i f the question the advan tage lo accrue to us from a through line of'coast railway from .Norfolk to Wil- miuglon md ihe South, which the building of these roads will undoubted ly secure to us in the near future, the writer confidently believes the local freights will support Ihe roads: and add greatly to Ibe volume of our business, let us consider Ihe Onrdow branch alone: Why, Ibere are three articles that will yield enough freight to much more than pay expenses. No one will doubt the claim that much corn will be transported over it to the Southwestern part of the Slate, besides all tbe corn that Wilmington now buys from the counties that lie northeast of us and which now goes to that city by Norfolk over the Wilmington Weldon Rail road. Mr. Worth, the V . S. Fish Commis sioner, has said, so we are informed, that there is in New River fifteen square miles of finest natural oyster bed on the oonlinent. With the present crude method of cultivation, and the limited extent to which it is nom, practiced, for but few people now follow it as a busi ness, and with the old fashioned way of transportation by carls over a sandy road, it is estimated that tbe New River oyster now sold in tbe Wilmington market alone 'amounts to about seventy-five thousand dollars per annum. This industry will be greatly increased and stimulated bv the success of the eoheme and New Berne will surely get a part of it, whereas it now gets, well, practically none of it. But as valuable as will be the corn and the fish and oyster business to be reached by Ibis road, it can Bafely be asserted thai the lumber to be hauled will be even greater. Onslow and Jonea counties are magnificently timbered and Northern capitalists have at last found it out. It is said that one Northern man has re cently purchased in the former county a sufficient amount of pine timber to keep two mills turning out thirty or forty thousand feet per day running for more than a dozen years. Where will this lumber find a market? Why of course, in the North, tbe South does not need it. And how? Over this road, because there is not sufficient depth of water at New River inlet and if there was just think about the dangerous and the circuitous route. Don't bother yourself about the road's living help to built it and it will feed itself and do good work for its owners. Why Craven county is not asked to give Its bonds to the road, but to simply subscribe them, and get stock for them. You' can be certain this stock will be worth some thing. It and tbe taxes this road will pay into your treasury will go far to wards paying tbe interest upon the bonds. But won't Wilmington get all tbe local freights? Certainly not. We will be nearer to tbe New River section by about fifteen miles, and when we agree to oonneot with the Wilmington road rest entirely assured that the men in charge will see to it that we are pro tected beyond perad venture against any discrimination in rates or in any other way. It fa a good thing, Mr. Editor. Lets all rote for it. v It will help nt to get the Cape Pear connection " too. It we show nap and. enterprise in this, they will say, well - rarely old Rip Tea Winkle baa at last aroused himself; and they will be all tbe more anxious to come down here. Yon know they say, "give a dog a bad same." Well, in one sense. i we have got that name, and it ill Lclp ' mightily to relieve us if we shall do ihie ' thlN5 aU wuh'Q "rlv" bu.ld these roads.
