We publish today the proposition sub mitted to tbe board of county commis sioner! by the East Carolina Land and Raslway Oo., asking for an election on a subscription to the stock of said com pany. The county commissioners ought to understand fully what they are asked lo do, and the people ought to fully un derstand what they are to vote for if the proposition is submitted. There is DO disposition to keep anything in the dark. It is a plain, business proposi tion, and on that ought to be consid ered calmly and dispassionately. The Enemy Closing On Us. Tbe Atlantic Coast Line it is said is to extend ite Scotland Neck branch road to Washington. This done, the corn trade which the Associated Railways hare been trying so long to divert from New Berne will about be gone. But theTJoTernor and hie board of internal Improvements hardly considers this a part of North Carolina, or if they do they think it is that portion thst ought to be tied down to wait the pleasure of the great railroad corporations. The next step of the Coast Line will b to branch off into Onslow unless the people of New Bern wake up and de vise means of reaching that county. The credit of the county can be used ritboat injury to any one to aid in tis enterprise and why not do It ? steamer Movement. The Eaglet of the E. On yesterday morning, at T SO o'clock, at Christ Church, Miss Nellie B. Long, youngest daughter of our distinguished townsman, John S Long, Esq , one of New Berne's most beautiful and at tractive young ladies, was united in marriage to Mr. William Frank Yoet, of the city of Baltimore, a prominent officer of tbe National Union Bank of Maryland, and a gentleman of tine at tainments snd excellent talents The ceremony was performed L) Hev. V. W. Shields, in a must beautiful and impressive manner; lu the presence of a large and representative assemblage. Joseph E. Rjbinaon, Loq . the talented young editor of the lioldsboro Argus, ailed as btM man, and W. V. Clark, Jaiiits 1 nomas, 11 C Stevenson, unJ Leinster Duffy officiated as ushers. The altar was beautifully decorated with lluwers. and the soft mellow light from many caudles lu handsome cande labra, presented a most pleasing and imposing picture liie organ was pie sided over bi Mr R lierry. Joe wed ding march was rendered iiiugiaud manner, and the soft and modulated tones of the organ, through the entire service, added much to the i harming ceremony . The happy couple left lor tLe North on the morning tiaiu. May happiness and prosperity cer dwell w ith them Ocalow Court--Crops Railiotvls. P.t Etc. The Supt ri r i ourl of One! . c C invened at Jm ksonville on ll Monday in November with Judge untv 1M I'hll hs presiding. Solicits haul, and by 'Iuesday A I It'll W Kh Oil Ilooll he had cleared his docket. There were sexeral conviclioiiH for petty crime-, some t-ul missions all without a spterli fnin any lawyer to the jury, which fact ac counts for the rapidity with which the docket was dispu-ed of. We do not note this for the purpose i f intimating that lawyers wantonly consumn the time of the court, the lime taken bv good lawyers in arguing cases is gene rally well spent. The people like to hear good speeches, they like to hear the law expounded , they like to hear discussion, and many of them go to court to learn eomothing about the laws which govern them, and they expect the lawyers to learn them. At this term there were present, Nixon A (ial loway and S. W. Isler of Guldsboro, W. E. Clarke, Clement Manly and P. H. Pelletiier of New Berne, and V. 1'. Koonce, Rodolph lu(Ty and T. K. (lill nian of Onslow The criminal docket was small, and some wiity fellow thought it was be cause the jnl had been burned and there was no where to keep prisoners, lie didn't think it would pay to rebuild the jail. A tax is levied for this pur poee, and a new one will probably be constructed during the coming year. The people are rather discouraged oyer the repeated failure of crops, but a large part of tbe county is not entirely dependent upon the cotton crop for money. They make peanuts, and many are making a good living, some nice little fortunes, by tho llsh and oyster industry, even though they have to haul them a long way to market. ('. T Rtn dolph of New Berne had a lot of his fine buggies on hand and made sales notwithstanding the sort crops. A young widower made a purchase ami straightway he was charged with the intent to get another wife. He ought to be found guilty. The commissioners were in session on Monday and adjourned to Tussday in order to hear a petition asking for 8 vote on the question of subscribing sixty thousand dollars to a railroad from Wilmington to New Berne. The prayer of the petition was granted and the election was ordered to be held on Tuesday, the 27th day of December. A new registration was ordered, and with the proposition to build from one city to the other the measure will likely go through. Craven county ought to ex tend a helping hand in this, as New Berne will have an opportunity of reaching a large trade that goes entire' ly to Wilmington. Tbe people of Ons low are anxious for a railroad, and, said many on the court ground on Tuesday, we want to go to New Berne but it is too far to haul what we have to sell ; help ns to build the road and we will ootno toeeeyou.:' These people are in earnest about this matter. They would not think of voting a subscription to one end of tbe road merelv, but aa soon as thea New Berne and Wilmington people have agreed to meet at the same point they are ready to aid. There are thousands of acres of fine fanning land that hare grown np sinoe the outlook of the war that will eooa be reclaimed when the iron horse goes ploughing through from Wilming ton to New Berne - 'f.
