The Newberne of the O. D. line eailed eeterday morning with a heavy cargo of various merchandise for Norfolk. Off for the State Grange. Mr. J. T. Eaton, State Deputy of Pat rons of Husbandry, waa in the city yes terday on his way to the meeting of the Bute Grange, which convenee in Tar boro next Tuesday. He haa revived and organised many Granges in this section daring the past year, and will doubtless oarry a good report to his brethren from other sections. Christ in the Camp. Mr. A. M. Caffoe is in the city can vassing for (Jnnst in the Camp," or 'Religion in Lee's Army," by Rev. J. W. Jones, D.D; It is a religious hietoiy of the Army of Northern Virginia, giv ing the details of many interesting re vivals, with illustrations. From a cur sory examination of its pages we find it to be a very readable book. Anything oonneoted with the history of that noble army is bound to prove more or less in teresting. This book treats of a subject different in its scope and deeign from the many other booke and papers that have been written; it takee up a phase of camp life that hae generally bren overlooked by most writers, but It ia none the less interesting. Help a Good Thing. Tbe committee appointed by the Cra ven County Gun Club to solicit dona tions for the Game, Fish end Oyster Fair are now making a oanvass of the oity for contributions to that purpose Three hundred dollars from the oitizens of New Berne ie all that is necessary to insure the Fair and make it a grand eucoes. If the coaimitte suoceed fn raising this amount, and thus make It a certain- we expeot to issue a ten thousand edition of the Journal, thoroughly ad ertieing the Fair and New Berne and her industries. We promise to bring a oro wd here that will leave five dollars for every one invested in the Fair. But it is not so much the dollar that is to be left' (we merely mention this to show that it will pay financially) ak the good that will follow a visit of many stran gers that we are after. The efforts of Commissioner Patrick in securing low rates of trsvel and in thoroughly ad vertising the enterprise will insure a large number of sportsman and other visitors wbo have never been to New Berne. It will be tbe beet advertise ment that oan be given of our oity ae a winter resort and will be sure to tell in the future. Conference Proceedings.
