We trust our readers will read care fully the aeries of article we are pub lishing on the railroad projeot. In his communication today the writer is striking the key note to the situation This coast line is evidently going to be constructed in the near future and the only question of interest to our people in the matter is, shall it touch New Berne f A fifty thousand dollar subscription will secure it. Nothing help a (own like manufac turing industries, but railroads are the pioneers in the building upand develop ing of all countries. Manufacturing follow rather than precede railroads. and in the construction of great lines route are selected that offer the greatesi inducements and show the best ad vantages. Wilmington ha made a subscription to the Onslow road and it construction is assured. It lies no witbin the power of the people of Crav ven county to insure its construction to New Berne and eventually on to Wash ington and Suffolk. It is a matter of serious business consideration with which tbe county's experience with tb. A & N. C. R. ought not to be miogled. Steamer Movements. Tbe Pomlico of tbe O. Editor Journal: -Tho Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad furnishes neither argument for nor against aotion on the part of tbe people of Craven county in behalf of further railroad aid and extension. If the experience of the people of tbe county, the Eastern portion of North Carolina or of tbe State at large, has been unpleasant, and oca of general disappointment, they have not far to go for explanation Tbe event of war and t resulting change of the oondition of affair affecting our section, defeated tbe high aims and expectations of the projectors of the A. & N. C. R R. I know that at tbe very moment of war, Governor Morebead had organized an association of capitalists (we did n t us a tbe term syndicate in thai day) several millions strong, which ww ready to push through tbe Wesk-rn North Carolina Hni road and the Cumberland Gap Extin sion to Cincinnati; and lines of foreigu steamships were already arranged for. to and from Morebead Cuy. TbeAt- antio and the North Carolina RailrouJo ihen constituted a harmonious North 'arolina system, and there never wnsa section of country with a brighter future than that which recently loomed up before us of Eastern Carolina. Hut grim-viaaged war cbungtd all this. and though she "smoothed brr wrinkled front at the end of four yearn, our prospects brightened no more. But for the untoward oircuiustaures f devastating war, who ehall say what the A. & N. C R R. would not have oeen to our people, and the courtly miu tcripnon. Instead of the burden it lias been in the estimation of most of the (axpayern, would havo bet-u. in pari, the means Of a measure of the highest prosperity to all But take it at its very worst, the A A N C. K It has been a great benefit ami ileseing to thu people of Craven and all that portion of the country contiguous to it; and theoounty would have been in finitely worsa off without the roud. than it ha been uuder tin- burden of the tubscription, aud no one cun sensibly o pose county aid to a toast line by illustrating the career of lint Atlantic and North Carolina Koad. Tbe Baltimore Hun enysthat General Thomas Ewing. Commodore A. K Hate man, Harvey Durand an J several Kug Hsb capitalists, at this inotneot on homl a yaoht exploring Southern inland waters, and already building the Allan tie and Danville Road, from Danville to Norfolk, via Suffolk, "bare a char ter for a road from Sullolk to Wilming ton, along the seaboard, and will com menoe tbe work of construction in the tpring. They claim to be' backed by twenty-two million dollars of capital. ' This, if true, is a giant piece of news for Eastern Carolina, and should stimu late our people to fall into line with this movement. Aud the peopld of Craven county should not lose ons mo cnent in falling into line, for the possi bilities are that Lkia line of ruad con templated by this syndicate will leave Craven just far enough to tli east to lamage instead of benefit it In fnrt tbe route has hem surveyed, and i proaohee Naw Uernc no nearer than Greenville, Suow Hill. &c. By voting the proposed subscription you locate a line of coast rail way. which would readily influence sound and en iible railway projectors to adopt it as part of a general seaboard system, for undoubtedly tho true line from Wil mington to Suffolk, strikes through New Berne, Washington, etc. But if the people of those localities sit still, re fuse to recommend and endorse their section, by manifesting no faith in it po-ibilitiee, men of money from abroad seeking tbe (hortett out to more dollars will paaa them by without having heard of them or their section. Make some noise. Raise a (bout and attract attention. Show that you have faith in tbe resources and possibilities of your locality, and when these gen erals and commodores of tbe North and wealthy Englishmen come projecting new railroads to build, let them find you alreadr moving ia the matter; and flourishing your county subscription in their f ces, make them adopt your line and build it. KriToH Jul RN Al. It was with much pleasure that I saw tbe item in your yesterday's paper refering to tbe im proyemeot of our sidewalks. If Mr Williams, chairman or tbe street com miltee, wishes to do one of toe thing" our city is most in need of, and one for which every citizen anoald tender their sincere thanks, it la to give ua good side walk. We have splendid shell streets for driving, but most of our sidewalks are abominable and almost a disgrace With the exception of tbe ouncrete pavement fronting Hotel Albert, and one or two other place where hard brick and stone have been laid, tbe pe destrian fair bad. Most of on r stores are handsome and contain elegant stocks of good, but tbe pavement in front of tbem spoils the effect. Strangers notice this abd no doubt thing we are or tbe don't-care kind and letting thincs go to wreck. To wondei fully improve tbem does not necessitate any great outlay of money through the resident al portion of the oity. Coal a he with a little soil thrown on the surface to solidify tbem makes a splendid walk, almost equal to asphalt. Many of our sidewalks dur ing rains bold great ponas of water, often tbe entire width of the walk, and especially baa this been characteristic of the walk on tbe north aide of Han cock street from down town to tbe depot, until recently. More earth ha been thrown op and that made level with a slight incline toward tbe gutter to runoff tbe water. Better sidewalk if you please. - X, Y. Z.
