But notwithstanding : the. disagreeable weather, tba email boy had tbe fire cracker and the tin horn ia full blast on I hristma Ee. knowing that they woujd have to discontinue their bow tereue fun oa Suoday and wait until Monday to finish np Christmas. Bust nee was pretty brisk with the mer chant Saturday the rain did not stop the boye from spending their Christmas money, and we guns tbe girls and "old folks." too. invested in 8m ta Claus. It was right quiet Christmas dsy. Ser vice were beld at nearly all tbe churches and were well attended. The Episoepal and Cathollo were tastefully and beautifully decorated. At all the churches the eervioes were ap propriate, and the music was fine, At tending the ohurche and sitting around th family heartb-etone was the most agreeable and pleasant way of pending tb day, for it waa very dis agreeable weather. A Christmas came on Sunday, Mon day was set aside as the day to celebrate and have a merry time. Early Monday morning tbe fire-crackers begun to pop and the horns began to toot and the fun oommenced. The clouds cleared away aud the sun shown for awhile with a bright smile that was very cheerful. Tbe livery stables seemed to be the busiest of all business places. Every boy, it seumed, wanted to ride, and tbey went on horseback in droves. So a great many bad tbeir fun riding, while ttiose who oouldn't procure horses, spent the time in vaiious other amuse ments. Tbe children and tbe teachers too, of the Baptist Sun Jay school looked for ward with happy expectation to Mon day ulght. A Cnristtnas tree was to be stripped of its fruit at Stanly Hall. Also appropriate and interesting services were to be held at the oburch before go ing to tbe Christmas tree. At 7 o'clock tbe members of tbe Suadsy school and many others gathered at the Baptist Church, every seat being ocoupied. Tbe servioes opened with music by the choir, followed by prayer by Rev. L W.Craw ford. Next on the programme was .music, and then little Miss Albert Snelllngs delighted the audience with a very pretty and appropriate recitation. 8b e rendered her piece in a way that brought forth much praise and admira tion froni the audience. After music, Mr. C. L Gaskill pleased tbe audience with an appropriate Christmas story, which he read in good style. After tbe reading of ths Story, to tbe delight and amusement of all the children eepe cislly Santa Clans appeared and in vited them to Stanly Ball, to the Christ mas tree. They ftJedjy accepted his invitation and marched in a body to the hall, where a; large Christmas- tree laden with beautiful presents awaited theis arrival, Little hearts beat joy fully: as they, gased upon the tree with its bough binding to tbe weight of ths many presents.. , Soon the work of gathering the-fruit from tb trt began, sod ' old Santa Clin era there and saw that the presents Were rightly , distributed- A larga 'nrowd a present and all seemed to enjoy it, Mny heart Were snade' happy .' ia ; a abort while and a merry Christ mas to them. -.Tb music at the oburch w.s appropriate wees grand, f Mis Fannie Holland presided at tbs organ; Tb Metbodist Sunday school f will have tbeir Chriatmea xsrclse tonight at the church 00 Neuss treet.:tt : .jr." ''( V ')'' I K Th Supreme Court ha decided that ths new registration ordered by the Board o( Aldermen of. the ilty of Wil m nton for the election In which a subeoripUon of SiOO.000 waa'voted to the Wilmington, Onslow & East Caro lina Railroad ' was . illegal. This is a pretty severe blow to the enterprise aud may caoad a 'considerable delay in securing a line of railway from this city tbrough Onslow county to Wilmington. Of course the- decision will have a most damaging effect upon the election to be held here and in Onslow county for without the aid of Wilmington's subscription the oonetruotion of the road cannot be gotten under way suf dcienlly to insure its completion, and we think tbe agreement on the part of the authorities of the East Carolina Land and Railway Company with the commissioners of this' county compre- bends the idea of a through line to Wil mington. True, the Star eavs that it is the purpose of the friends of tbe road to apply to the Board of Aldermen to order another election, in conformity with the rule laid down by the Supreme Court, but tbe meaitre vote cast in favor of tbe subscription to the former election and the further faot that the city is about to make a sub soription of $150 000 to the Cape & Yadkin Valley Railroad, leave but little bope that the measure will ever be carried with en increased rigisira tion. With these facts starring us in the face, with tiie already strong opposition to a subscription in the couply it would seem like folly to go into an election. Personal. Prof. K Q.
