The Cotton and Grain Exchange met yesterday to memoralize the Uoicrn meat for a public building at this place. Also for macadamised road to the National Cemetery. The annual meeting of the Female Benevolent Society will be held at the residence of Mrs. Susan J. Dudley this afternoon at 4 o'clock for the election of officers. A full attendance is requested. The first floor of the building adjoin ing the Atlantic Steam Fire Engine Cempany building' on Craven street is being converted into a room for the hose carriage and horse of the above named company. Funeral Notioa. The funeral of Mrs. Julia F. Small will take plaoe from the Methodist Church at half-past three o'clock this afternoon. The friends of the family and the public are invited to attend. Proceeding of the Board of County Commissioners of Craven County, held at Court House on First K on- day in January. The board of oounty commissioners convened yesterday at 11 o'clock. Pres ent: James A. Bryan, chairman; W. G. Brinson, W. M. Watson, S. W. Latham and Tbos. II. Mallison. It was ordered that the application of Major Gaskins for correction of the tax assessed againBt him on 192 acres land. No. 3 township, for 1887, valued at 604, be referred to the clerk of the board for examination aud correction, and thai he report his action at the next meeting of the board. On motion of oommiaeioner Watson, the following submitted by him was adopted : Whereas, Il appears, to tbe sulif faction of tbe board that tbe keeper of tbe county poor houBe baa become incapaci tated, by reason of bodily infirmity, to discharge the duties of tbe position. It was ordered that Commissioner W'alBon be and is aulbori&ej to employ some suitable person as keeper to suc ceed the present incumbent. John T. Lincoln tendered bis resigna tion as keeper of Clermont bridge, w hich was accepted, and J. J Ballard ap pointed to fill his place. The report of the committee on bridges was accepted and approved by the board . Win. A Thomas, constable of No. 2 township, presented for approval bis ofH cial bond, which, being considered good, waa approved by the board. It was ordered that, in consideration of her leaving the poor house, Dolly Taylor, colored, be placed upon the piuper list, at a monthly allowance of 81.60, until the further order of the board. It was ordered that the application of Arthur Jones and Anthony Murphy, of So. 8 township, for relief from exces sive lax of 1887, be referred to Commis sioner W (1. HeitiBon, with power to act. Upon application, and sufficient reasons bring given, it was ordered that the Clerk issue two monthly vouchers, one for 81 CO, for support of Moses Weslbrook, aud one for 81 00, for sup port of Thomas Moore, until the further order of the Board. Tbe appftoalion of Celia Fulford for reduction of valuation of property, No. S township, for 1887, was referred to Commiseionei Brinson and the asses sors of No. 8 township. It was ordered that the lax charged to 9. II. Gray Manufacturing Company , No. 7 township, for 1887, amounting to 8180.00, be remitted, the said lax not being a legal charge. Upon recommendation of Commis sioner Urlnson and assessors of No. 8 township, it was ordered that the valua tion of tbe lot listed to James A. Bryan, No. 8 township, for 1387, be reduced from 83,500 to $2,500. It was ordered that the time for the opening and examination ot pro posals to build a bridge across Neuse river be extended until the next meet ing of tbe board on the first Monday in March next. It was ordered that the Clerk issue to James M. Howard a voucher feu 825 00 in lieu of an old voucher. Ordered that A. C. Hart be exempt from the county peddlers' tax on ac- oount of bis poverty and infirmity. Oa motion tbe board adjourn until 10 o'clock this morning. Presentation of a Gold Medal. At their regular monthly meeting last night the members of tbe Atlantic Steam Fire Engine Company presented to Mr. William Ellis, Foreman of the Company, a' handsome and coetly gold medal and watch charm, as a testimony of their high appreciation of his ser vices as Foreman. It is circular inform and surrounded with a wreath ex quisitely and elaborately chased. On one side is a representation of a steam fire engine, above which are the Initials W. E.," composed of sixteen brilliant diamonds. On the reverse aide ia en graved "1837" with the following in scription: "Presented to William Eilia, Foreman, for efficient aervioea, by the Atlantic Steam Fire Engine Coapaay." A highly deserved testimonial, as Mr. Ellis has given his time and best ener gies, and ha been to considerable expense in brincing hie company up to its present discipline and efficiency. The civil service rules and regulations have been revised, some important changes being made. President Cleve land approved and promulgated the new rules last Friday. They go into effect on the 1st of March next An explosion Occurred in a powder mill near Cleveland, Ohie, last Friday morning. The total number of business failures occurring throughout the country during last week number 27U, against 317 the week before. Kxtensive forgeries on the firm of Edwards & H rough ton, printers and binders, of Raleigh, have been dis oovered. Checks with the name of the firm forged have been received at lbs firm 'b bank from Wadesboro, llillsboro and olher places. The Elixabeth City Falcon says About ten o'clock last Friday night a large meteor fell into Pamlioo sound about six miles south of Chiokamacomi co, near Gull Shoal. It lit up that sec tion for miles with great brilliancy, and when it struck the water musthave ex ploded ,as it made a report like the firing of a cannon. The North Carolina Pine Lumber Company is a new enter prise, organized by Messrs. W. J Griffin and W. O. Temple of this town and Mr M. J. Sawyer of Camden. They have bought a large tract in Tyrrell, contain ing about fifteen million feet of pine timber, and have contracted with a Norfolk mill to deliver the logx on the river banks. They bsve several first class ox teams, several of which have been in tovrn some days. They are having troublesome times in Pennsylvania. Some of the miners who bad returned to work at William Penn colliery were stopped by the strikers, and a skirmish with pistols ensued. At Shenandoah s tremendous riot broke out last Fridsy. When tbe miners in tbe collieries which recently resumed operations, quit for the day they were attacked by crowds of idle miners, and were defended by the police. In a few minutes the entire town was in pose oss ion of tbe rioters, and any number of broken beads aad bruised bodies oould be founJ.
