Rev. Kr. Fear son' Meetings.
The cburoh was pretty well packed at
the 11 o'clock service yesterday, many
being present front V the tor
rounding country. ' ' The Bible
reading was on "Confession." A
doxen or more passage of scripture
were commented upon with great sim
plicity, making their meaning clearto
all and producing much effect upon the
audience.
Persons who had not attended the
after meetings, and who had heretofore
ooofessed Christ, were given an oppor
tunity to re consecrate themselves anj
a considerable number went forward.
At night the house was denselj
packed. Li-ing the largest audience per
haps since the meetings began. The
preliminary services were conducted by
Rev. L. W. Crawford.
Rev. Mr. Pearson talked about Jesus
and II io Love. 11 is text was the parable
of tbe Prodigal Son, as given in tbe 15th
chapter of Luke.
Tbeie were three points iii the prodi
gal tou 'fc life that he wittbed to speak of :
ll His departure from his father's
huube.
2ud. Hie return to bio father's houBe.
Uij. His n-eepiiou by his father w ben
tiu returned.
Three poiuts weie discunsed allegori
call) . Tbe prodigal sun was a remark
able type of urjbavtd man. The spirit of
incoordination caused the prodigal son
to leave his father's house, so the spirit
of insubordination and rebellion
caused man to wander from God;
the prodigal son did not want to
be eiide lined by tbe wisdom and
teaching of bis father, eo sinners do
not want to be side lined by the teD
commandments, Ood's laws and Uod'e
government. The prodigal Bon came to
bcaO' and want by his prodigality,
sj siuuers are coming to bepgary and
Kpirilual want.
When tho prodigal sou resolved to
return to bis father's house, there was
actum ; bo thould tho sinner when he
resolves to come to Jesus, act at once;
with tbe prodigal son thore was a com
plete surrender to and implicit trust in
hi father, on should the sinner sur
render to t'hrnt and trust implicitly io
him; the father received tho son with
tendernc-HH nnd compaueicD; bo will
Christ receive sinners. These points
were brought out with such simplicity
and force that all could understand.
At the after meeting the house wes
crowded and there were many earnest
inquirers, among them some with gray
hairs and reclining forms.
Bible reading this morning at 11
o'clock. Subject: "The Love of Jesus."
Give the People Employment.
Our correspondent "X" is right in
suggesting that the people of this oity
need employment, hut we can not en
dorse his plan of bringing it about. It
will not do to 'start private enterprises
by taxation in order to give the people
employment. A. county or city can en-
oourage enterprises of this sort by a do
nation such as releasing from taxation
or giving a site but we hardly think
there Is any law by which the credit of
aoouuty or town oan be used to build a
cotton factory.
Now we hardly tbink New Berne is
a poor as our correspondent thinks.
The abstract of lis tod taxables of Cra
ven county for tbe year 1887 showed,
money on hand 872 914, solvent credit
$193883, bank Block $115,000, bounty
bond $8,025. It Is true that over half
the bank stock listed is not owned by
parties living In this county, but then
some of our people have investments in
non-taxable securities which do not ap
pear on the tax list. So here is about
four hundred thousand dollars, not In
real estate, but In cash, a large part ef
which oould at any time be converted
into manufacturing enterprise If it
owner so chose. Oae-roarih or this
amount would stdrt a pretty good mill,
one that would pay handsomely if
properly managed And one that -would
give employment to a large number of
worthy people.
Ye, sir, the money is h.re to start a
cotton factory, but Its owner: have an
easier way if not a better paying way
of investing. We fear some are allow-
ing their money to canker nsteejl of
putting it in some enterprise that . w ill
be eDefioial to their neighbor aa ?wejl
u to themselves. Th maa who tarts

way that we can provide for tbe em

help them and at the seme time help
everybody else by building up our
town?
How would it do to bond the city for
$30,000 for twenty-five years at four
per cent, and put this capital, with
50,000 more p-iivate stock, and hav.
f& 100, 000 invested in cotton factories?
How many bands would that employ?
Would it cot pay the city, and would

If a recent consular report i to be ac

ton mill by the aide of which the largest
mill in America must look small. Tbe
New Orleans Cotton World, (peaking of
It, says:
We learn from a foreign consular re
port recently published that the largest
ootton mill in the world Is that of
Krahnholm, in Russia. This ooloea&l
establishment contains 840,000 spindles
and 2,200 loom, dispose of a force of
0,800 horse-power, and gives employ
ment to 7,000 hands. The motive power
is obtained from a fall on the river Mar-
owa, which actuates eurht turbines,
which were manufactured io Augs
burg. Four of these turbines produce
a force of 4.000 horse-power each, and
diiMh&rge 10,000 litres of water per
second, one having bean mounted in
1?67, since which time it has worked
nigbt and day without any repairs. The
shafting of the machinery represents
U 4 'it! running metres and was supplied
by a Bolton firm. The work people are
