The ISews and Observer pa) s the following well merited compliment A gentleman who was in this city from Wake Forest yesterday was heard 1 1 speak in the most flattering terms of the address of Col. John H. Long, of New Berne, before the students and faculty of Wake Forest College. Col. Long spoke for forty minutes on the practioal uses and advantages of educa tion and its bearings as an element of success. He was listened to with the most profound interest throughout, and the address was spoken of in the highest terms by all who beard it. It was said to be learned and scholarly, yet practi cal and pregnant with thought and logic. The address was marked by Col Long's characteristic strength, powerful strokes and masterly oratory. The students especially were reported as wild with enthusiasm, and so captivated were they with the address that a large number assembled at the train yester day at the Colonel's departure and bo vociferously called for another speech that ho was forced to responl briefly before leaving. The occasion was a pronounced success in every particular and Col. Long's address was such an effort as all would have expected who have ever known and appreciated his happy faculty for doing honor to an oc casion of that sort. (Jive the People Work. Epitok JofBN'AL Your printer ruined mo in tody issue by taking out just one 0 and thereby making mo say 850,000 for 8600,000 and S 100,000 for 1,000,000. The doctors say that a bad disease re quires a severe remoJy, and I am sure that you will 'agree with me in think ing the idleness of New Berne is indeed a bad disease. Now a $100,000 cotton factory would be good, but would not begin to meet the wants of our working- people, for we ought to employ at least 3,000 peo ple, men, women and children, and it would be much better to provide profit able labor for 8,000. Now my simple proposition 1b to bond the city for 5500,- 000, to run fer twenty-five years at 4 per cent., to add this to private stock for (cotton faotories of $500,000 more, thus making a capital of 91,000,000 to begin operations at onoe and to oontinue as long as it shall be profitable to man ufacture cotton, and it Is reasonably sura that it will always be profitable. It may require some legislation for the city tolengage in such enterprise, but this can be remedied very easily. It is also true that there Is some little capital in our oity that might be invested in this way, bnt they don't Invest, and who can asy what other people shall do with their money. Look at this propo sition right square ia the face and see both sides. Weigh the good and then weigh the bad (if any) and come to a just conclusion. This ia a question which has pressed itself on me for some time and I believe it is practicable. ' You say what an enormous debt to put on the oity. Yes, but the. Btock would never be worth less than par and hence it wonld be no debt at all. But you say bow about paying the $30,000 per annum in teres tr I answer that we would pay this out of our earnings which would probably not be less than $40,000 per annum. Bar what other good would come out of this? In this short communication I can only give a limited answer to this. Three thousand factory hands paid, only $5,000 per week wonld be 815,000 spent weekly in our city, or $780,000 annually. Mer chants dont It make your hair rise to think of it? ' Laborers don't- the blood staTiin your veins to eon template It? If the poor had profitable employment they- would soon want houses, land, to. and real estate' would likely ad-rance-100 par oent- ia twelve months. New Berne has the best locality in the State for this work and in many respects we are ahead and if this thing oonld be secured we wonld bate the 'greatest boom- in North Carolina and it wonld be substantial growth. Now this ia enough at this time bnt business men, and poor men, will yon not think and speak on this subject? '.- -Yours for the good of the' whole peo ple. i -5 :- - - i -; - X. t .
