Commissioner Dan. K. Poiry of Kinston was la the oily yesterday to hear the case of U. 8. ve. J01. W. Wat son and Wo. U. Wataon, jr., charged with using the United 8tatea mails for fraudulent purposes. Clement Manly. Esq. and Hon, C. C. Clark appeared for the defendants, dis trict attorney F. H. Boebee, Esq., for tbe government. The government introduced the post master at New Berne, a postoffloe in spector, the agent of the Booth era Ex press Company, clerk of the Clyde line of steamers, the cashier of the National Bank and the collector of theeame, and other business men of the city to show that the defendants had used the mails in the praotloe of a scheme and artifice to obtain goods fraudulently. The defendants introduced no testi mony but their counsel argued to the Commissioner the inefficiency of the tes timony offered by the government, and asked that the defendants be dis charged. The district attorney in reply argued that enough evidence had been intro duced to show, not only probable cause but a prima facie oase, and asked that I the defendants be bound over for their appearance at the next term of the dis trict' court. They were bound in the sum of two hundred and fifty dol lars each for their appearance at the spring term of the district oourt! . A warrant waa also issued by Com missioner Perry, upon the affidavit of the postoffloe inspector, for Alex Justice upon a similar charge. Mr. Justioe was taken before tbe Commissioner and the district attorney asked that tbe oase be continued until the government can get important witnesses. L. J. Moore and W. W. Clark, Esqrs. appeared as coun sel for Mr. Justioe and urged an imme diatf hearing. After argument tbe Commissioner continued tbe case and the hearing was set for Friday , April th. Mr. W. H. Barclay, poetoflice inspeo- tor, is workiog up these cases which he aays will be prosecuted thoroughly and without flinohing on tbe part of the gov ernment. It is a matter of extreme regret that young men just starting out In life should be charged with auoh a serious offense, and .for their own sakee and their friends and for the credit of the oommunity it is to be hoped that tbe oharges against them have been exag gerated. But the cases are In auoh shape now that a full investigation will be made, and for this reason judgment should be suspended for the present. Personal. Mr. Thos. H. Hall and wife and Mr. Edward U. Thousands of invalids have been unexpectedly cured by their uss, and they are tbe wonder and ti read of physicians and medical colleges in the U. 8., so much so that physicians graduating at medioal colleges are re quired to discountenance Proprietary Medicines. as through them ths country doctor loses bis most profitable practioe.
