Tbey will be take if up to Trenton oa the steamer Howard next Tburtdsyi Letter From Go'vemcr JarvM. Mr. Jonathan HAvens in this city has received a very long and exceedingly interesting letter from the Hon. Thos. J. Jarvis, present United Slates Minister at the Court of Braail. It is written with his usual simplicity and direct ness of style. Id speaking of the eman cipation of the slaves he says: "The country at large has been going through the same trouble that once afflicted our country, lo wit: a chaDge from slave lator lo free labor, iih this difference in mode e changed in war, while the Brazilians are working it in peace. There has been goiDg on for years a gradual system of emancipation, but still it has all the time been attended wiib that degree of agitation that the material development of the country has been more or leas affected by it The end is now near at hand, and the close of the year 1"W will see but few slaves in Brazil. The sentiment and movement iu favor of immediate and total emancipation grows and gathers force with each day and many large slave owners are toying freedom to their slaves of their own accord. Many large coffee planters Iraye declared that coffee could not bs successfully pro duced without slave labor, but it be gins to appear that they were about as much mistaken as were some of our Southern planters when they said that the freedom of the negro would put an end to the growing of cotton. You de sired me to give you a letter about Brazil, I will do much belter, 1 will sand you a hand book of Hio Janeiro which conlaine several photographs that will recall to y.m aouie familiar places. ' The Hay of Kio, " he says, "grows upon one the more be sees of it I never tireof looking at it or sailing upon il. Taken all in all (one naval oflioer told me) that it is the most beautiful harbor in the world. But with all its beauty and grandeur, I would be til ad to be with you today iu New Berne at your Fish and Oyster Fair, and look upon the less beautiful but to me the much dearer harbor of New Berne, and this brings me to express my pleasure to know that the good people of the Elm Cilv have determined to hold such a Fair and 1 shall after awhile read of its succes, as 1 feci confident that it is a success. ' ' The Governor states that the Emperer Of Brazil is now in Europe on acoount of ill-health; his eldest daughter, the Princess Imperial, is cow regent and 1 discharging the duties of the throne, and everybody teemi quite well oon tent and give her a loyal support. The Governor says: "My health is better than it was some months ago, but I am by no means as hearty and as robust as I was when I was in New Berne last spring." If Governor Jarvis had been here at our late Fair, he would have been as much sur prised and astonished at what the good people of New Berne can do when they work together with a will, and we predict, that the next Fair in New Berne will surpass anything of the kind ever before seen or dreamed of in North Carolina. Some may think and express themselves that the people of New Berne are asleep; they are much mistaken, let them have a chance to get to ibe outside world, give them cheap communication with, the West by rail, and also North and Sroth, and the change will be like the workings of an Aladdios lamp. They never had half a show, but now they are aroused and are determined on a change, and a change they will have aud that for the better. Special Meeting. Thero will be a called meeting of the "L. M. Association" on Tuesday, May 1st, at 12 m , at the residence of Mrs. John Hughes on Broad street. At this meeting the final plans and prepara tions, will be made for the ceremonies and exercises of Memorial Day, May 10. All members are therefore earnestly re quested to be present. The A. M. E. Z. Conference. Six Bishops, Tlx. : Jones of Washing ton, D. C., Moore of Salisbury, Lomax of Charlotte, Thorn peon of Nswbnry, N. N. Ord, Hood of Atlanta.jtnd a number of ministers arrired last night to attend the conference of that denomination. Memorial Day. ' Oar country friends will remember that Thursdsy, May 10th is memorial day and they , are expected to meet hi New Berne and joist id the annual tribute to the memory of oaf dead; General Robert Ransom will delivsr most interesting address and the ladies bars promised excellent music,' Let Oa hare a fall gathering on that occasion. Mr. Kennedy, on taking the chair, made a few remarks bristling with patriotic senlimeut and devotion lo the great principles of the Democratic party . On motion, W. H. Herbert and Dr R. W. Woolen were made secretaries. C. W. Joyner moved that a commit tee consisting of two from each town ship be appointed to select delegates U Ihe yarious conventions. Geo. ltountree moved lo amend by restricting the number to one from each township and that ths delegate from each select their member of the com mittee. The amendment was accepted and the motion adopted. The following gentlemen were se lected as the committee: Kinston town ship, I.. Harvey, Contentnea Neck, Lewis Kilpatrick; Southwest, Dr. R. W. JoyDer; Institute, T. M. Aldridge. The committee retired and the ohair mon suggested that some one of the speaking gentlemen entertain the con vention. C. S. Wooten, Esq., responded to a call. He didn't know whether he was en titled to speak or not. He was edu cated a a lawyer, but a short time age an organizer of the Farmers Alliance came along and took his lioense away from him. He knocked at the door of the Alliance, but they told bins he was a lawyer and could not enter unless he would agree to abandon' the practise. He replied that he quit the practice about fifteen years ago, but the people continued to call on him to do a little business and if the Alliance could re. lieve him of that be would like it much better. Upon this statement they took him in. He then led off and made a good, sound. Democratic farmer speech. He thought the fact that the Democrat of North Carolina were a little scared was a good sign. The trouble heretofore has been that tbey were too confident. He urged harmony and stioking to the nominees of the party. Be had no fear of the result in North Carolina. N. J. Rouse responded in a short, strong speech for harmony and a united effort to uphold the principles of the Democ ratio party. Mr. Wm. Dibble also responded ia a few remarks, urging that the bloody shirt waring by Ingalls and Sherman should Inspire the Democrats of the South with new seal and a determina tioo to keep each sectional haters eat of ths control of . the government of this great country. B. W. Caned r was called for. He answered that "his voice was 'still for war." " The committee made the following report: t Bftxxa Area to BTirt: oosYsSmoiu K. B. Whitfield, J. M .
