For over tw enty ears tlm old guard of the IVmncracy ( f Craven county, through got d and evil 1 sport had been stand ing by their colors Overwhelmed by numbers, getting neither help nor encouragement from abroad, treated with indifTerence by our party leaders at the capitol, we had struggled bravely on, loyal to every principle, submitting to every hard ship, content only to be Iiemorcrats, and to w ait for the coming of better days. And just when tue better ele ment of the Republican party, tired of the corruption of their associates, threw in their fortunes with us to help redeem our glorious old county, and thus came to the Democracy of the State its erandest opportunity to help us. 1! 1 turned our gallant representatives from its doora, and abandoned us to odium, calamity and defeat. Put notwith standing our expatittion from the legislative halls, which, in the most illustrious period of our history, had ob tained their highest hopors and noblest fame from the gifted sons of Craven, we are. still loyal to the principles and memories of tbe past. Yea, more, our people, with a unanimity never known before, are standing shoulder to shoul der, one in their faith, one in tbeir)bopes and one in their purposes rosolveM to de mand and obtain for themselves rec ognition from their brethren of the State at large, for their political purity, sincerity and faithfulness, and to place the prosperity of this section beyond any question in the future.
