It was our pleasure to attend the annual basket picnic of New Berne Grange, V. of H., at Clear Springs Farm yesterday. A large number of the farmers with their wives, sons and daughters assemblsd together and spent the dBy most pleasantly in conversation, while the children skipped about the picturesque grounds, jumping from rock to rock and across the rivulet the sparkling waters of which w ent rippling towards the rolling Neuso. At one o'clock a bounteous dinner was spread, after which Jonathan Havens, Esq , of this city was called upon and begavean interesting descrip tion of California, its hage trees, gold mines, forests and wheat fields. We were called on for a speech, which we did not make, but simply reminded them that there was no better State in the Union than North Carolina, and tbat tbe farmera of North Carolina only needed harmony and concert of action among themselves in sustaining their neighborhood schools, and maaiog their homes places of pleasure and happiness, as well as work, for their children. P. M. PearsaT, Esq., of Trenton, was oalled on and responded in a neat and appropriate little speech. The farmers of the ninth township ahow evidences of progress. This is to be seen in the condition of their farm?. school houses, churches and roads. Clear Spring is a beautiful place, which Mr. Havens, who has descriptive pow ers, has promised to write up. We b ope to be there at many more annual basket picnics. That Rare at of Combinations. True delicacy of flavor with true effi cacy of action has been attained in the famous California fruit remedy, Syrup of Figs. The Sunday S, hool of Christ Church, together with a num her of invited guest, tripped on board the steamer Trent at the foot of Craven streoi on Wednesday morning and stwatned up the Trent river to Foy s mill. Here a lauding was made and after a general ramble through the groves over tbe hills and about the null that essential to a successful lucmc, dinner, was eet. To say that the repast was abundant sod sumptuous would convey but a feeble idea of the quantity and quality, and that it was heartily relished is lo weak lo ex p ess tho enjoyment of all who partook. After dinner, all aboard and another run began, ibis extended up to Capt Taylor's lauding, live or six miles ibis side of 1'ollocksville. Inuring this run a hat was lost overboard, tbe only casualty of tbe day, except the killing of a huge alligator on tbe down trip, the bojy sunk and was not recovered, but the lost hat was found, and the only accident of tbe day repaired . Everybody enjoyed themselves and all boldly said so. Superintendent Bong was along and by his genial manners and careful at tention lo the comfort of all, both of tho school and the guest, proved him self as elllcient iu tbe management of his school when "out for a day as be has shown himself in the more arduous duties of the school room. Of oourse all who went will declare that they bad "the best time I ever did have, but in truth and earnestness, with our experience of a score of years, in a commendable zeal and punctuality in attending picnics, I aay I never did attend a more enjoyable one, and only wish to never be at one less so. Not a glass was broken or child hurt through out tbe whole adventure. I shall not describe the scenery for two reasons, first, because I could not do it justice, and second, because I took but little notice of it and do not envy any one who could, when there was such an aggregation 01 lovely womanhood and beautiful maidenhood on shipboard to engage the attention. The day was propitious. A cool south wind made the lighter wrappings of the ladies necessaiy to comfort, while the Prince Alberts of the gentlemen only looted the more becoming when closely buttoned up. The small boy was in bis glory and tbe employment of one hand to bold his bat on, under tne natural law of compensation, only gave him tbe better use of his legs to roam around the boat the more frequently. Reaching town before sundown, it was suggested that the steamer take a short turn up the Neuse so as to give the party a duck s eye view or tbe city. This was done and tbe boat rounded in to the Clyde slip just as the gather ing shades of twilight set in and all were safely landed, with as before stated not the slightest accident to mar the pleasures of the day.
