Through the portion of the farm in front of the dwelling, runs a beautiful, clear, cold stream of water fed from a gushing spring, ruDing from under a huge boul der of conglomerate shell rock; both banks of the stream, for a distance of several hundred yards, are of this rug ged rock lying in detached boulders of enormous eiz.e. la one place a huge slab of stone has been thrown by some titanic force accross two boulders. Standing in an erect position, forming a natural bridge, underneath of w hich runs the stream of water. The banks on each side of the stream rise gradual ly and would be very easy of ascent, if it wttre not for so many boulders pro trudiog from the ground. All along the banks on both sides is an immense grove of very many vaneinsof tiees .Some are of unusual s.e 1 counted i 'J red cedar trews in a r o w t o of them measured over eleven feet in circum ference. The shade is den si- and al most impervious to the ra) s i ( a suSS1 nier sun, and in the hottest weather the atmosphere is delightfully cool, ll is a spot one loes lo linger in. and aside from its great beauty, there are aseociatiurjfl connected witli it, that makes it one of the interesting places in North Carolina It was (irst settled upon by James (ireen. to whom it was a colonial grant His sou. The entry was made in the town of Bath then containining lli hosues i some lime in the year 170(1, five years before New Berne was Bellied by De ( J raffenreid . 1 have no doubt that lie wus the ancestor of both James and Kurnifold (ireen, both buried m iho above mentioned grave yard. He wbb a man of note dur ing the HeltleniKiit of the State, and judging from the numerous grants of laud recorded in his name, many of them on Neuse Hiver, he was a very large landed proprietor. John Green, though an oflioer of the crown, soon became a rebel of soaie note, unfortunately he was stricken with the palsey, consequently debarred from much ser vice in the field. It is related of him, that while his farm was raided by a band of lories in search of liquor, under the command of one Cox, whom he bad brought up from a boy, bis body ser vant came ia the bouse and told him thattbe commanding oflicer was Cox. The old gentleman became so SDgry that, lame as he was, he seized bis stick, limped down the high steps, and made hi way to the cellar door, en tered, and in the face of the entire band of tories belabored Cox wiih his oaue, and in language more forcible than po lite expressed hia opinion of him. Wh. t was the language used tradition has n t iu formed us, but the reader may rest a mi red that it was sufficiently strong, as he lived in a swearing age. John (ireen lies buried under tho Kpiscopal church in this town. He was grand father of Judge George Green. Mr. Cicero Green and Mrs. Elizabeth .ireen. His wife was Lydia Cogdell, whose Bister, Mrs. John Wright Stanly, nas mother of tho distinguished John Stanly whose remains lie in the Cedar Grove cemetery near th? entrance in a lot surrounded by a shell rork wall. I neglected to state that the IHb township, in w hich Mr. Green's farm is situated, is the beet township in the county of Craven. 11. Keep the Cattle Up. Never theless I do endorse Bible temperance and morality, which is highly endorsi d by the laity and clergy of my church I know of no minister's immorality lhat is a member of this Heneral Con ference. Neither did I intentionally make tho charge. If any one present were guilty let him tremble. I had reference to all such preachers and transfers as Uey. J. T. Pearsall, w ho divided our church In the Slate of Ala bama: T. T. B. Winston Taylor, tbe parson age burner, lor which crime be is at hard labor in toe State prison; A. Bill, who divided several of our churches in ths mountains of North Carolina. Who of my critics will deny the above state ment. Zion Church has been made to suffer by bad men in the pulpit. Trans fers, the cburohes north and south, east and west, need them and must bays them. Bat not like Pearsall, Read, Taylor, Hill and company. Give as good men, ministers like these trans fers in the N. C. and Central N. C. Conference, who stand as.high, morally Dealing, as any in the land. I should not be selfish; I am not. We have transfers in many of our conferences that are of the highest type of Christian ministers Our race as well as other ' racus of mankind must be elevated from immorality, lt ihe mln Latere of Christ take the lever of God's Holy Word, i and from ibe sacred rostrum raise the millions of our people to a higher re. , hgious stau Jard.
