The Partridge Law in Jones Ccunty.
It seems that "Bob White" is giving
our Jones county fanners some trouble.
Not long since complaint was made by
sume of tbe farmers near Trenton about
the law prohibiting the shooting of
partridges after tbe 1st of April, as
they were destroy ing the corn. Here
is another communication from the
upper portion of the county:
Editor Journal Dear Bir 1 saw in
tbe Jones county items that one of our
farmers thinks the law in regard to
shooting partidges ought to he repealed.
I agree with what be seyV for they are
doing my crop more damage than the
crow, and I think the farmer ought to
have the right to kill any bird that is
doing h mi harm

If Mr. loidham will eiamine chapter
204 of the Uwb of 15 he will tind that
the law in regard to shooting partridges
does not apply to the counties of John

THE JEWELS.
That was an interesting session of the
Jewels which took place at the front
door of the Cotton Exchange on Friday
afternoon.
Tbe Panel was not as fuli as on some
former occasions, but yet a good flow
of spirits or a now of good spirits look
the place of numbers and was an )m
portant feature of the sitting. It might
be styled, for want of a better name, a
politico-soeialico session.
Discussion opened upon tbe Constitu
tion of the United Stales. Tbe rights
and powers of the Slates under the
compact and the powers of the National
Government over tbe sovereign States,
were considered the right or wrong
of secession receiving a passing notice
From Ibis in avenue opened up to a
discussion upon the men of that day.
The social habits of the Father of bis
Country receiving rather more attention
than his patriotism of which so much
has been already said
General Andrew Jackson was not
overlooked, although his private life
was looked over pretty carefully from
Salisbury to New Orleans, and from
there to the While House, an l at the
Hermitage. The discussion was well
spiced with anecdotes and some of them
well preserved as all limber is euscep
tlble of being when if Ihe rl ?n i,
family .
The Panel was in line humor, hilan
ous to a noticeable degree aud of the
most agreeahle temper in the discussion
of the afternoon. .N olhiug occur red to
mar the enjoy meut of the sisbioii. and
only one mention was made of the
events of the present day, and that was
the modest announcement of a member
that he would like mightily to vote for
Gilmer for Governor there being no
objection be may do so.
From the grave subject of govern
ment tbe Panel slijed off into a yarn
spinning adventure, at which perls, iui-
perU and experts took a hand.
All went joyous as a marriage bell
until one of the experts introduced the
story of a steamboat explosion in dis
tant waters in w hich be was just beyond
the reach of one of the boilers that came
plunging on deck, and nearly wrapped
in lUmes that were licking their blaz
ing tongues after a cargo of six tons of
gunpowder which seemed so intensely
perilous that an immediate adjourn
ment took place even before he could
reach the finale of bis story and tell
how he found his vest with eight bun
dred dollars in tbe pocket or tell how it
was that he knew it occurred at twenty
one minutes past 8 o'clock on the morn
ing of the ninth of October, 185a

have been kept and but little is known
of her glory. It is characteristic of N.

Norfolk's Municipal Election.
Norfolk, Va.. May 81. Yesterday
closed one of the most heated muni
cipal contests in this oity for years. At
one time it appeared that a split in the
Democratic party, growing oat of a
preliminary election, would result in
the election of the Republican ticket,
the Republicans at the last moment
having taken advantage of the division
in the Democratic party and nominated
a ticket. A Democratic compromise
was, however, enacted tne nignt oerore
the election hod the result is a strong
reform council foil of Democratic sal
