Krom a privete letter to a gentleman in the city we learn of extensive opera tions in the Mann-Arrington gold mine in Nash couBty. The new and im proved machinery is in place, and toe business is rushing with over two hun dred bands. It is stated that the tail- in cs are worked oyer by persons in the neighborhood who pay a share for the privilege, and one man has in this way realized as much as $24 in one day. This mine is in the neighborhood of the old Portis mine, which was extensively worked years ago. ihere are also a number of other gold mines in that vi cinity, which are about the furthest east of any gold workings in North Carolina. That section was visited by a heavy rain and hail storm last week, and much of the cotton rained by the hail, which was reported to be as Urge as -walnata and six inches deep in places. Matthews. At II o'clock this morning it was staled that the (leneral's mind had re mained clear. He was resting juietly with little or no pain and for the time being his condition was slightly im proved. The organic diseases from which he has suffered, however, remain unyielding. He was more or less de lirious all throughout the night, not violently , howeyer, for he was too weak for that, but he could not recognize the members of his family or his physician and refused to take any medicine or nourishment. About .' o'clock this morn ing bis mind cleared and be readily took milk. Ills medicine was given hyperder mically. Each of the several attacks which he has bad lately has left him much weaker than the previous one. His rallies have been but partial and uDsatifaclory and altogether the case is a most desperate one. From the infor mation received from high sources it is believed that the end is not far off. Hi on hi-d from Ills x ni til In the Palapi o Kiver. BaI.timjkk, June 8. T. Harrison Car rett, brother of Robert (iarrelt. and manager of the banking firm of Robert (larrelt and Sons of this city, was drowned last night in the Palapsco River. His yacht Gleam, in which he and a party of females were coming to Baltimore from Anapolis was run down off Seven Knit Knoll by the steamer Joppa and sunk, being struck amidships and almost cut in two. According to accounts all hands on the Gleam were rescued except Mr. Garrett, who was seen by a pissenger on the Joppa to fall overboard. All hands on the Gleam excepting Mr. Garrett were say ed. Some of them climbed on board the Joppa and the re mainder took to the boats and were taken on the steamer after an extended search for Mr. Garrett. Mr. Garrett was in the act of attempting to climb up the anchor chain of the steamer when the vessels drew apart and Mr. Garrelt went overboard along with one of the boats of bis yacht, the davits and some wreckage and was not seen again Not That Smith. A plainly-dressed man who intro duced himself as Mr. John Smith walked into a doctor's offloe, and, hav ing explained his symptoms, asked the doctor how long it would take to cure him. The doctor, wbo bad treated the visitor with every possible courtesy, re plied: "You will require several years' careful treatment under my personal supervision before you are perfectly well; but I think, Mr. Smith, you will be able to resume your labors in tbe bank in about two months." "Doctor, you are fooling yourself. I am not Smith tbe banker, but Smith tbe street car driver." "Is that soV Well, my good fellow, I don't sea what you came to me for.
