He is evidently impressed w ah the manner in which school matters are conducieo at "The Huh." Industrial education is what North Carolina needs todav. A boy or girl to make a useful citnen must have the hands and the heart as well as the mind taught. There bus been some talk, a little legislation, and a small amount of money appropriated, for an industrial school in North Carolina. One may be established after awhile, but one will Dot fill the hill. Every town or city in the State or every neighborhood that keeps a public school open eight or ten months in the year ought to have in industrial department. New Berne ought not to run a public school another year with out training the children in one or more industries. How many girls in the city who have graduated at the Graded and High Schools that know how to pre pare and cook a meal well but. says one, "they can learn that home. " Yes, and they can learn books at home, but it must be remembered that hot little cooking is properly done. Build fire, heat water, boil a pot and fry a slice of meat about completes the coarse of an ordinary cook in these days. Most any negro girl claims to know how to cook, but there is a great dif ference in cooking and properly pre paring victuals for the table. There are certain things about a bouse that girls should learn to do and do properly, and not the least of these is cooking. No matter if they are the daughters of a millionaire and never expect to bare anything to do with cooking, yet they should be able to ell how it ought to be done and know when it is done properly. Oof people may have a prejudice agaiasi New England ways, bat one who rtaite that ooantry and examines their system of education ii tare to be favorably to pressed. - Excursion up the Trent. The Y M C. A. went up TrcLl rntr Tuesday on their annual picnic. The crowd wan not ai large as had been anticipated but it was a jovial one and we believe everybody were pleated. ! The run was made clear up to Trenton forty eve miles, a point that is seldom reached by excursionists. Neuse river has again been on a boom and no one able to drive over on Satur day, Sunday or Monday, the road being washed in two between Kinston and the iron bridge. No one means to find fault of the river, but many complain that there is no need of so much loss and in convenience to the merohants and citi zens. The first freshet which rose several feet over the road no injury was done, because the road was carefully watched and not allowed to wash in two in any one ptaoe. The next rise was allowed to wash the road to pieces and cost the county about fony dollars, besides the inconvenience and loss in many other ways. This time a party who crossed on rriday informs us that he could have prevented tbe washout at1 an expense of not more than two dol lars. We do not know tbat any one party should be blamed, but the com plaints are so numerous and the incon venience so great tnat we think tbe county commissioners should authorise some party to watch the road during high water ana prevent a washout in every possible ' -i.4t would be the ounce of prevr nd much chenper than the pound t e. Tne course of study i:i tin- -t hool is similar to that of our schools, hutj thiuk, more thorough and nearer perfect. Put the mont striking features and the part of the scho d most admired by the writer is the sew ing and cooking departments. Surely these branches are very important, and should be taught in our public schools. The ability to do such cooking ami such sew- j uig as was exhibited in Ihid hoeton sobool should be considered an accom plishment by any young lady. 1 wish our New Perne girls could see some of the Boston girls work in this line. I don't know a great deal about sewing or cooking, but do not hesitate to ssy that a young lady skilled in the art cf cooking or sewing has an enviable ac complishment. Indeed, 1 think, if North Carolina wishes to bo up with the times, these things must be introduced into her public schools, and if our young ladies desire to have the modern accom plishments they must learn to sew and to cook. While the "(lid North State'' may be a little behind the times in educational matters, she has no cause to be ashamed of those teachers who have ventured beyond ber borders. Indeed, it is with great pride and satisfaction that New Bernians learn of the success of Miss Corinne Harrison as a teacher in Bos ton. Sbe is one of tbe teachers in the school which we visited. Our people know of her ability as a teacher and the high place she occupies in the esteem of every New Bernian. In this Boston school she is surpassed by none. Be loved and respected by ber pupils, esteemed and admired by her fellow .teachers, she is looked upon as a model teacher. It is hoped that she will re turn to ber native State in the near future and give the young "Tar Heels the benefit of her talent.
