X. Uaha's Card EplTxh JoCRIIAL: 1 have seen that my communication on ' Coalition in Craven County" has struck deep in some quarters. Meyer Habn, ei-Sberirf, says that wheal said that "a barge sum of money amounting to 81,1 10 W which bad been withheld from the county, ha been unearthed and recovered" that 1 in ferred that be bad dishonestly with held that amount from the county, and that I am a-baee liar, hired lackey, etc 1 In the report of the oounty commiseion ' era made to tbe board of magistrate? on the fourth of day of this month appears this paragraph : "With, some of the county offioers we have had considerable trouble and have ' been greatly embarrassed by Uieir ac lion After the settlement with M llann, ex-Dberitf, in August, 1687, the suspicions of the board were aroused by the discrepancies that existed be I w ben the amount paid tbe Slate by him and unoont paid the county as Hhenr! onacoountof schedule Bux. A commit tee of the board was appointed consist ing of Commissioners Brinson and Latham, who after thorough examma lion of the accounts of ex Sheriff Hal.n as to the amounts collected by him fur schedule B tax from the time he rirri went Into office up lo and including July . 188C, Ihey f ou ud that af ler ded net ing what he was entitled to that he owed the county $ : 111)",'. The large hulk of that amount was due the 1 oun ty during the first two yearn of his orti oial life, lo wlt, 1-1 aud Not w ithstanding the fact he bad made I. is settlement and returns to the couiuiis siouen that amount whs withheld fi,,m the county for nearly five years. The amount of J 1 , 1 10 j.'l was paid in Decern her. .s'-7, after the Superior Cburt ha 1 decided that he wat- elected Sheriff the county . Are lhet.e gentlemen boss liarf R ,1 : Ham e k jr did oppose Ibe adopti ii ( the report aud made a statement char,; ing negligence ou the part of the hoard of commissioners Out it w as so thin that H) reply w ss tvt r olfori d . and the re port was adopted by the hoard by a otrici party vole. Justice Hancock failed to show how it was that ibe Sherili knew trie right amount due ibe Slate, and paid, but did not know how much was due the county which is the same amount exactly. The prompt pay meut after the diecoveuy might have been made with an eye to getting into office again, something that has en gaged Msyer Hahn s attention very continually ever since he was turned out. But I have no cause to go further in proof of the assertion that u large sum of money amounting to 1,110.53 wqich had been withheld from the county has been unearthed and recov ered for Mr. Hahn admits it. and him self acquits me of lying about that, however much 1 may be a boss at tbe business. Meyer Hahn is a candidate for elec tion to the same oflloe that tbe money was recovered from. Haven't 1 a right to show why be should not be returned? Mr. Hahn thinks not: gets angry, uses libelous language whioh he will prob ably regret when brought before the ourta for it I am no candidate, and Mr. Hahn should have learned by this lime that private character is one thing and official corruption another. How long it has been since a man's Union sentiment of 1800, honestly carried out during the war, disqualified him from being worthy of holding office In Mr. Ilabn's estimation is not stated, but it will be news to his friends in this conn ty. I came to New Berne before tho war, was here during the war, and am here now. Iid Meyer ever get here until he followed up the Federal army and then more concerned in flour ttTan IKiwder. But why should I lire your readers any further with Meyer Hahn or his exploits in the writing line. He will need more legal advice in that than be did in the Sheriffalty if he will only keep writing. He endeavors to screen himself from the odium of this unpleasant matter be hind the acts ef his attorney, Mr. Ste venson, which is most unjust and lack ing in moral courage. He says Mr. Ste veDson and Mr. Bryan had his books to examine. 80 they did ; but neither Mr. Stevenson nor Mr. Bryan had kept tbe books, and it was in the keeping of the books that the mistake was made, as the commissioners' report shows. Either of these gentlemen would have known that if they had received $2,800 for the 8tate and county, to be equally divided between them, that when tbey paid one they owed tho other, to say nothing bf having $1,400 in money that they did not know who it belonged to. The amount of taxes which Mr. Stim son should collect is for him and the commissioners to know . But neither of them will inquire of Mr. Hahn how much to collect, when he could not tell how much he had collected himself. The statement that the license on dealers in liquor was double now what it was when he was in office is simply untrue, and a fabrication too absurd to deceive any one. The act of '85 makes it $30 for three months, that of '87 makes it $40 for six month, and to say that this doubled tbe tax is an evidence ef bow some people will pervert the truth when o glaring that it at once expoies the falsity. A to my character, it is as well known in tbe community, and as free from taint a that of this mud-slingtcg creature, or I should feel like leaving tbe county. I, too, oan write to Ral eigh ; there I was born and hare rela tion living; and a gallant brother buried in Bertie oounty, where he died from honorable wounds received in the Confederate army. Any one wishing to correctly under stand the netare of this matter oan get a fall history from tbe records of the county. My official acts as public ad ministrator are all matter of public record and open to the scrutiny of any one who. wishes to aee them.
