If indeed it was pardonable to allow
our national birthday to pass uncele

are a united and prosperous people
once more, it would be becoming and
appropriate for us to lift high our ban

it floats in pride nd beauty from the

Tb.9 Btrgnr & Kngel Brewing Co
Id this issue will be found the adver
tisement of the Kergner & Engel Brew
ing Co., of Philadelphia. Aa atonic,
and for purity, cleanliness and care iu
manufacturing, the beer put up by this
Company is taking the lead. Dr. H. A.
Hare of tha University of Pen nay I
vama, in an article published in the
Medical News on tho influence of beer
on Salivary and gastric digestion, gives
experiments with twenty-four varieties
of beer, showing its influence on gastric
digestion. lie says:
To sum up the results of these ex
periments, we find that the beers ex
amined varied in the action as much as
fifty-nine minutes, and that while most
beers do not retard digestion in all
probability in the stomach, that others
such as those mentioned in the first
part of the table, aid digestion yery
materially. Thus, in the case of the
Bergner & Engel Brewing Co. 's, it will
be noted that even in the test-tube the
average delay in gastric digestion
equalled but one minute and thirty
seconds.
This beer is bottled in this city by
Mr. James Redmond who receives
direct in barrels. In an ice vault ar -
rabged on the steamer, from F.' W.
Adams, the manager of the distributing
house at Norfolk.
