The first essential is to know how to use the hands aright, with the view to keeping the ' head well out of water, and the next is to keep one foot on the bottom nntil sufficient confidence is acqaired to raise it at intervals. After a few trials the learner will be able to raise; It altogether. Tien, be not in a hurry to ue the hands, aa if life depended on strik ing oat, bnt try and acquire de liberation. Let every stroke have a fall sweep of the arms, and let the feet take care of themselves It il not necessary that the feet should be raised to the surface oi the water. ' The body, from the shoulders downward, should be kept at an angle of 30 degrees to the plane of the horizon. This inclination, with every forward movement, ill tend to throw the head oat. . Sperm whales, when frightened, sink their flukes and Uhrow their heads ont of water, to ,vuuuo weir oigoesi speed. j.ne head of or, a sperm whale is flat at the front; and is one-third the size of the body; the head of a finback is pointed;. the' one throws his bead oat, the other rashes through the water horizontally. The learner who wishes to ao quire the art of swimming It'or re creation and not lor professional purposes ought to pay little atten tion to tbe movements of the feet, until he has perfect control of his hands; then the feet'will instinctive lyjcome into play and perlorm their part witnouc much thought. Who think of their feet when walking! In the early itagef of learning a swimmer does not aeem to be.eatia fled until he brings his feet to tbe surface. This has a tendency to strain the body J use above the hips, ana to bury the head. Swimming in a seaway the body will take many positions, according to tbe waves encountered.; Sometimes it will b vertical, and at Other times more or less inclined to keep the head oat. ;. ', It is welt for a beginner to have a person with him to" keep big hand under his chin at first. t while the use of the hands is being acqaired These bints apply only to common horizontal swimming; thai; having Dees acquired una confidence ob tained there, will be no difficulty ia learning all the other movements, such aa swimming on the side or on the back, diving or:: turning ; aeela Over, bead, forward or backward, t t Remember this' too. that it a per1 ion taken; wjth, cramps wlih throw nimseir npon ftia.Dact Ji mih float without ,tCort, evea fltkii -An should be drawn ,rjp. , t ifeve neglect to itofl the earn with icptton-wooL Many penons have attxi buted deal nesa to ULk? watr-'tl)roD2W the ear-whensti lars-wnen-sticir'rs:-- , v ' aa pi , m,t; rC i Tlif If fill At BTWtolltBTajL..
