the attic of the opera house at
Joseph, Mo., in order to take
the proceedings of the meeting of
the Locomotive Brotherhood. The
Brotherhood took the precaution to
search the building for spies before
beginning their meeting and the
shoes of the reporter, left on the
stairway leading to the attic, lead
to his detection and he was marched
to police headquarters.

to relieve the colored people for

C. O. Ross, deputy sheriff of Durham,
yesterday brought to the penitentiary
David Simmons, York Gibson, Henry
Battle and John Justice, the four col-

the 8d of next month for an attempted
assault upon a negro woman, the Gov
ernor having commuted the sentence to
