Parenta can not te too cartful & to the class of reading matter that goes into their bonus. Iu the selection of papers and books the greatest care should be observed as to their tone and purity. The reoeut issue of the novel, "The Quick and the Dead," baa received much harsh and severe criticism for iu low and disreputable character, but the mere mention of such vile stutT mar be impolitic andcsuse it.to be nu rj widely spread. On this subjx't the editor of the Wilmington Scar. a ceotle- man of culture, loftiness and rrliuenlent, concurr with us as illbtstn from the following quotation We take occasion aome tiuie to tin the reader against certain books. Hut it is a fact that with that large class of readers without taste er judgment genuine love of the pure and refined in letters tne sure way to induce tnem to way read vicious books is. to condemn them We found that the more you warned the public against Miss ltives's most unfortunate story, ' The tuick and the Dead," the more you increased the number of readers. And yet, from what we can learn, for we have not read it, no pure minded woman can aiTord to read such a work and a maiden should blush scarlet if suopected of reading it An Opinion of tin- l'r' Editor Journal The remarks under the above caption in Wednesday 's Joi n naL bring to mind an event of thirty- five or forty years ago Mrs. Bloomer was endeavoring to introduce the cele brated Bloomer costume. This was a dress for ladies and almost an exact pattern of young girl's dresses of that day in the length of skirt worn, with pantalettes like (hi school misses. Withering sarcasm was hurled at the innovation, bach wearer was stared at as she passed down the streets or public thoroughfares. Unseemly comments upon the rotundity of the ankle and various annoying taunts about calves and so forth. Feminine vanity was sel dom put to a severer test than on this occasion. But the capping climax came from an old-time country editor who went to the city to see this disturber of social equanimity; who on his return wrote an editorial endorsing the fash ions, adding that he was seldom per mitted to enjoy the pleasure of ladies society, and wished to see as much of them as possible when an opportunity offsred. Now the editors who were at Morehead and saw the scanty dresses mentioned, should tskethe old editor's view of it and say.'go on ladies, if you oan stand it we can. SockQrapks.
