Ia the meanwhile oar time wilt be felly occupied with working n toe large stock of ma terial now on hand. Daring the year somewhat more than two thousand and three ban dred tons of steel rails have been laia, leaving three-quarters or a r.ile of; iron rails between New i rne ana uoias&oro. This gap will be filled in with steel rails opon t'.a cessation , of summer travel, U is recommended that one thou sand and two hundred tons of steel be . placed In the track , before the coming summer. This amount in addition to the best of the bid iron rails "now on hand with those that can be secured from the track thus renewed,. wiU. enable as to still farther j quicken oar passenger schedule, and to pat the balance oi tbo old iron track, a little less than twenty-roar miles, la very fair eon ditioo'.for another year's service, at the expiration of which time, at the very latest, It should be enure ly replaced , with , steel, as the vitality of 'the . iron seems to be entirely gone, and it is wearing very rapidly, and we do not believe it can safely be trnsted for a longer period. 34 " " 40,903 cross ties have been used daring the past twelve months, and a UtUe over 13,500 more are being distributed, making a total of 54,499 tics.1 This amount and more have been greatly needed, as. many ties r'M are rotten, and ahonld come ( t at boo., In. another year it v, ill probably, be possible to report a comparatively sound track. The i: r are Bflw being accurately rnced twenty-four inches from j rentre to centre. .Heretofore they have been : laid with little or ho regularity, in many cases being as mucb as one yard apart." It is now in better condition than we have ever kaownit.'. , ;Anew and improved 'draw has been put ia Newport river bridge, andv is 1 otherwise beinr repaired. The tin roof over Stony creek bridge baa Dean replaced. , . n - Twelve -mew. calverts have been bails, and all bridges; uestle, and calverts have 'been thoroughly in spected, - and material ordered for loeic repair waeraver aeeaeo. ad uniform standard for the construc tion ol bridges, trestle', cattle guards, and . calverts," has ,bee.n adopted, and they are now built from uniform standard working drawings; These working ! jilaiw have : been ' adopted after mi ch study of the most improved meth ods of bridge and trestle construc tion, and aa a consequence these structures will in a short course of time assume a symmetry and uni formity of ahepe and increase or strength to which they have hither to fcaea strangers, as well aa allow aa taterohangeof parts, resulting in great . economy in the con struction department. The ter minal wharf and warehouse at Morehead have been completed. This is one of the most substantial, commodious, and convenient build ings of its kind in the Southern States, and is a great acquisition to the badly needed facilities at thia point. A sew water tank has also been erected at Morehead. A new warehouse, ticket office and waiting room have been built at Core creek. Three new truck platforms have been erected along the line. Two of these are covered. One new aide track has been put in, and the aiding, at Clark's h8 been extended to hold thirty cars. The old rron frogs of antiquated pattern are being replaced by new steel frogs of the most approved design. Your attention is especially called to the yard at Morehead and to the vast improvement in appearance and condition of the tracks, etc., thereon. The road has been continuously ditched and thoroughly drained from New Berne to Morehead, and in this respect is now in better fix than when first constructed, as the system el drainage is perfect, and has been constructed without, re gard to time or expense. There is no longer any trouble from water on this end of the road. A gang ot men is now engaged in cutting out fifty feet of the right of way between Hew Seme and More- head and all trees on either side of the track, which might reach the rails should they fall. They will shortly arrive at the former place. Above New Berne the cutting has been in great measure finished. About the middle of August should be began the ditching and draining between JNew Berne and Uoldsboro, ana it should be prosecuted to com pietion. ! All felled timber, old cross ties,' etc., the accumulation oi years, are now being : regularly piled lor burning, and the right of way is gradually beginning to as sume a neat and tidy appearance. No such rubbish is now allowed to collect AOtwitustanaiog the immense amount of work that has recently been done opon the road, and the great quantity of material that has been placed in it, one must no.t suppose that it is in first-class con dltion, for it ia not. and it will take years to put it so, but the work: of reconstruction .is. under fall head way and is being pushed forward, ana at lass nae oegan 10 snow. , I JNo : passen ger i connection has been missed daring the past year, and ail trains have been run with tei0aritytndduatc7;V,.;-V-K After nearly , three years of con stant effort we have been enabled to establish an all fail ronte for the track of this section, reducing the time between New Berne, and New York about . twenty-four , boors. Track now reaches New . York in thirty-two hours and ten minutes from New Berne; going through in Solid trains, there being no trans fer, as the cars are carried to the New York docks from Jersey City oa na. foiM quica nnrenas oeen of immense benefit to 6ar trackers'. as it has made it possible for them to get better faces' for their pro ducts, and. they have, arrived at their destination in better condi tion, owing to lack, of handling, and the short period of transporta tion- in ventilated cars. These vegetable trains in many instances were ran at the highest epeed the ?ncs conli make, and hat: 'crrTat-'i the safetv cf f - While tie e. g-.:ts have bea kept ia asUte cf rt; ir tLev are wcra and used a? tlrcc4k cc&staat new macMoea. Two first class paa seager coaches and tlLrty t and dox cars wooia materially increase our facilities for handling business, but the wants of the track and road bed have been so great that ia all eases where possible , the many needs of other departments have been sacrificed to them, and should be until they can be rebuilt. The rolling stock is in a good state of repair, better than for years past. ' The Atlantio Hotel at Morehead, whose interests 'and those of this company, are mutual, baa passed ibio ua aaaas oi a nnanciaiiy strong syndicate, and Is becoming probably the most lameus summer resort on the Southern coast Its management is capable and Is giv ing universal eauaiacuon. ' - r The permanent location oi the Teacher's Assembly of this State has . Dee a secured at Morehead, where a fine Assembly Halt has been erected lor their use. Our passenger earnings will very, ma terially bi increased thereby. Tbo Inter-State , Commerce Commission, to which ruliog this company is now subject, requires that the annusl report to be mado by carriers shall oover the period coding with the 30th day of June in each year. Our present fiscal year ends Msy 31st, so it win be necessary at this meet iog to change this date to June 30th, and this must be done ia oider to conform to this require ment The volaminous collection of blanks for the exhaustive and de tailed report demanded by the commission is submitted to your inspection, and it is therefore necessary that the annual meeting or stockholders be. a gain changed, and we suggest the last -Thursday in August as the most early date practicaDie. x While the tonnage of the road has been much increased we have been forced to accept a lower pro portion ot rates toretain the busi ness we have secured. It is very doubtful if ' the through tonnage can be farther augmented, and we shall have to look to .the develop ment or local and passenger busi ness to give as 'greater earnings. It is an unequal struggle this road has been maintaining, with its powerful competitors, and it has done well even by . the closest economy to have held its own. Close attention to its traffic, how ever, and' the various , changes constantly taking place (n railway systems, and combinations neces sarily; . resulting therefrom will eventually- make it a valaable property.. .
