It was late in the night, ahe ayi, whan a buggy, in which was seated a man and a woman, passing in the direction of the city, whs stopped by a man in the roadway, who waa ap parently well known to the occupants of th vehicle and who commanded the young woman to alight. The woman got out or tne buggy wunout hesitation, and when sbe alighted was immediately eeized and severely beaten by the man with a whip or oowhlde. The woman made ar outcry, and her male companion whipped up his horse and left aa soon as she got out of the buggy. After beating the woman the mac ordered her to go home and followed her closely aa ahe walked off toward th city.
