Sixteen thousand nine hundred and serem; three bushels of corn shipped from Lenoir depot from January 1st to Jul; 31, and yet there are thousands upon thousands left in the county and the beet prospects for a big crop this fall that we ever had. Mr. I. F. Steele, son of Henry Steele, left home about a month since on a prospecting tour through the West. News wag received last week that he had joined the regular army for five years, and is now stationed at Fo.t Riley, Kansas. Charlotte Chronicle: Wo regret to hear that Fred. Strudwick, Ksq , is yet confined to his bed. The party is losing a great deal by the inability of him and 1 Mr. Sanderlin. There appears far more hopefulness and cheerfulness among the farmers of this section than waa discernible ten days ago. 1 he late rains have wrought this great change. Corn, cotton and other crops have re vived greatly eicce copious showers have fallen. In many places a full crop ia expected, while in no places may the crop be expected to fall below the av erage. In Union county the crops are reported to be very promising through out. Ann Wallace, who cut the throat of Millie Robinson, will be tried next Friday. Wilmington Messenger: Yesterday morning, while the street gang under Mr. Dan Sheehen were cutting some weed, in Messrs. Fowler & Morrison's lot, oav Water street, they came across two beautiful spider webs which were inhabited by four very large yello spiders. When the weeds had been cleared away so the webs could be plainly seen, the discovery was made that each had the word "Wilmington N. C," printed across the face, as if photographed' there. Every one who saw the ourious spectacle was struck with wonder, and at least twenty-five people, white and black, gathered around to get a glimpse of the curiosity. The words were sufficiently plain for each to readily read it, and one of the web. which was placed on a sheet of paper retained the outlines for a con siderable length of time. The two web. wer. about five feet apart when discovered, and were of a gauzy, fan like appearance that made them things of beauty. The question is, though. bow the words got there, and various were the hypotheses offered. Some ad vanced the theory that they had been photographed there from the printed words on some nying pieces of paper others thought the spiders must have made their web. of paper with the word, printed thereon, and that the paper had been reduced to a film, while other, flew from one explanation to another. While none of the theories may b. true, the remarkable ciroum stance itself is vouched for by Mr Sheehan and all who saw it. Notice.
