What Nsxtr The Coalition ticket In this county is again defeated, and this will, ws sup pose, put aa and to all efforts to secure such representation in the Osneral As sembly as will proTs beaefloial to the county. The Republicsns did not keep the faith as well as they did two years sgo. On the night before the election the most bitter partisan speeches were made and the prejudices of the negro aroused, which told at the polls the neit dsy. It is well known that for years Re publican offl ;rs of this county have hot given their bonds without tha aid of Democrats. These fellows who go around in ths night time aad arouse the prejudices of the negro against the interest of the taxpayers of this county ill now appeal to Democrats to aid them In giving their boside, aad by tha aid of the money obtained from these offices will keen alive these Dreiudic w ia order to keep themselves in office. We think about the best thing that oin be done now ia fr Democrats to hands off, and if the officers declared elected by tha returning board today can not give such bonds as the law re quires, then let the offices be declared vacant and for onoa give us a clean-cut Democratic administration of county affairs. It will do tha taxpayers o this oounty good to see once mora a Den ooratlc Sheriff with his Democratic deputiee, a Democratic Register of Deeds and his Democratic deputiee. and a Democratio Treasurer who will pot like the prsdeeeesor of the, frasant efficient Treasurer, store his vouchers in Boston for safekeeping, aad who will not withhold tha schoot fuada from the children of the county. It ia not infrequently tha case that good cltisens find themselves tn a di lemma, that ehalleogea their closest scrutiny and most serious consider ations, and such is Use situation that now confronts tha people of Craved Tha Coalition movement bis bean da f eated in a moat outrageous manner. : Forty-eight hours before the election; all the evidences, before tha public, in dicated the success of Coalition, hat on Monday night meetings were held at West End and Jamea City at which white men addressed large masses of colored people, and draw the color line as U bad never been fan before. The result was juit as it was Intended to be. It is charged that a reign of; terror was inaugurated, and tha colored men who had formed a Coalition Club at: James City, and the mlaistert who had advo eated Coalition in- New Bern,-wr forced to abandoa their politlcal pr In eiples and personal preferences', and voie againit their convletibas. If the shout and clamor of the mob ware art, it might be regarded aa a carnival of "fas and fury signifying nothing.," But, It s said that threats of : pataonsl yloleuca were made, and is soma cases executed- : In one of theea eaaee av a was taken -e and thrown in an branah; and, In another, the venerable paator of the largest eolored congregation fs s city was set ippon and frightened from ths polls, ; (r ia believed that at time in the bistort of thU people has' In timi- datlon prevailed to such aa extent on last Tuesday Jlowy t' there up vemedvfof thif? iMart1thIs,faIr' Ian be throttled and i topoded a v Elation of law and order?
