The mQrntng star heralded it ; nature and man have welcomed it. Old Time, must have smiled as he looked apra his new born child and saw its promise. Years aie like ships that sail upon the ocean. Some nre mer chaatmen freighted with wealth. Some are yachts devoted to picas ire. Some go out with precious eargoej and return wiih de.tthly pestilence. We trust that 1S80 will be freighted with benedictions, and blessed by favoring winds. We trust that there will be few wrecks qpon our shores, and that wealth aad happiness may be wafted upon every breeze. We trust that this lead of onrs this free America of boundless possibilities will con tinue to be under the superintend ing providence of llim who was oar father's God and, is our God, blessed forever more! We trust that the American flag will rise nOtyl its stars blend with the stars of heaven. Whatever of partisan spirit may have existed in the past, we trust that President and people will rise above the murky atmos phere of party into the pure heaven ofmtriotism. We trust that the anllhisheu work of the war will be BDeedilv and e'oriooglv accom plished. George B. Cowlan, in the .January number of the Forum, beautifully and forcibly say: "With a cli mate and conditions of health un excelled in the world; with dynamic forces of coal, and a water power to be calculated from the immense area, great elevators and heavy rainfall; with every mineral and forest weath which enters iuto the arts and construction; with its winter garden of the coast country oa one band and the grains and grasses of tbe Ohio and Mississippi TaUaji. oa tbe other, the Appa laehiaa region of the South lorms the basis of a manufacturing coun try compared with which any other part of our continent, or within the known world, is insignificant." '.The rariety of soil in the South er 'States is as great as that of cjlipitei and yet its resources will one day be required to meet tb diversity of agriculture which wiU follow industrial diversity In otbis. fields. Here in tbe South is -the field upon which can be o$atje$ a home market and differ ing home productions whether of the field, forest or mine, whose needed exchanges will enrich. While their growiug demands will taij the soil of the West and the ' indoatries of tbe East. broaden the general founda ttariaof oar continental common- - wealth, by bringing into supporting relatione tha wealth, institutions andlplejests ot the South, is the infiniaBed work of the war. War la bafttwVegr guard of civilization. Ita task l to bold tbe ground nntil tka'lokVi lines of progress can be : fe aaw for still further ad ; TgpMSTbe tcboolhcnsf , the mil), tbArvMcrU mine, connected ty rallratds, and tbe people who maa and operate them, mast con -atitute the permanent forts and r - xniaoB - Br taia un.i . qner. The aew lines t be formed will diride the colored aa well aa the white rotera of the Sooth, and political race prejudices and tears will disappear. " Att this cannot be accomplished in a jear. Bnt if 1SS9 opens aua picioa&lj) if the ides of March emit ao lorid flame, bat light the political beareM with supernal beauty, it may jnstly be re f ardld as the dawn of a bright and glori ous era in American history. Bnt bow breaks the Sew Year en North Carolina t This New Year's morn is most propitious. There are clouds in the Eastern sky, bat thty are as the fringe of imperial robes. There is not a spot in the South "re favored than this, our own loTed State. It is the relm ofex- haustless mines of mineral wealth, and of broad plains that reward, with lucioua fruits and golden grain, the labors of the husbaod ni an. From Tennessee to the Atlantic it is a goodly heritage. In our mountains picturesque America is seen iu its most gorgeous majesty. The interior resounds with the rush of varied industries, and the Kast rejoices in the abundance of it veimtll and thA mnltitnt and variety ol its fishes. The sea kisses the shore, and roars for the commercial crown unjustly den i d , to her. 1889 will make imperative de mands upou North Carolina. Oa ward is the watchword. The bar riers must be removed whenever they are found. The East and the West must be linked together with iron bands and New Berne and Wilmington be the gates of her commerce. There is no littleness in North Carolina. We are not envious of Charleston and Norfolk, but we are jealous of our own honor and ambitions of honorable achieve ments. For reasons utterly incompre hensible to ordinary minds, the fairest part of North Carolina the garden spot of the world has been permitted to languish for want of the fostering care of the State. Let the Executive, the Legislature and the people awake to a proper realization of tbesitna tion, and 18S9 will bo the most glorious year in our history. THE TEACHERS' ASSEMBLY. Ihe Executive Committee Blocks Out a Programme for the Next Session. The executive and programme committee of the North Carolina Teachers' Assembly, which as an nounced yesterday has been holding a meeting in this city to formulate a programme for the next annual meeting of the Assembly, com pleted iCa work and adjourned yesterday. There was a full attendance of the-Committee, which is composed of the following: Prof. Geo. T, Winston of the University, chair man ; Mai. E. G. Harrel of Raleigh, secretary; Prof. M. II. Holt of Oak Ridge Institute; Capt. John B. Brjrwell of Peace Institute Prof. Chas. D. Mclver of Peace Institute ; Prof. E. A. Alderman of the Goldsboro public schools ; Prof. M. C. S. Noble of the Wilmington public schools, and Prof. John J. Blair of the Winston publioschools The time of the next session of the Assembly was set from June 18 to July 2d inclusive, and tbe place Morehead City. A most valuable and interesting programme was arranged in lull. It provides for ten special days during the session, one of which will be "State Day," on which occasion there will be present the Governor and military staff, all tbe State officers and the members of the Supreme Court. The exercises of the day will consist of addresses upon important matters of our State history, in eluding many interesting personal reminiscences. One of the most noted and popu lar public men in America has been invited to formally open the session of the Assembly in an address on the' morning of June 19th. The whole work or tbe coming session will be more interesting andval nable than eter before and it is expected that ' the attendance will reach more than three thousand. The privileges of tbe member ship and attendance will be, as heretofore, extended to all teach era and friends of education in tbis and other States. Tbe membership fees win entitle members to all re dactions of railroad rates and hotel charges. The hotel rales will be II per day for ' females .and 2 per any i or mjuea, - - .." At the close of the session eaa hoadred . teachers will make a six weeks' tour to Europe, oa which the entire expense of travel and hotel charges will sot exceed one hun dred, and " fifty dollar eacTie party wi3 go aa far as Paris and Constantinople. News and Ob server. !Uw tear la CUaa. Good cheer and good resolutions are now in order all over tbe world, for this Is the holiday time of the human race, pagan as wtll as Chris tian. The very slaves, of whom there are happily aot so many as there were a quarter of a century ago, enjoy a three days' banquet of freedom at tha close of the yesx, daring that seeming pause of our task-master, tbe sun, as be tarns to retrace bis apparent course through the heavens. Every people celebrates the fes tive season in ita own way, aad with sack mesne as it can command. Mrs. Bryee, of the English Mission in China, reports that the Chinese employ tbe firecracker to a prodig ions extent in testifying their jo? at the coming in of the year, la the third night of ber residence among the Celestials, she waa roused from the deep sleep of midnight-by a universal discharge of firecrackers and other explosives. Tha noise announced the new year, and bad the additional utility of driving avTy all the evil spirits that might be lurkiog about to disturb the gayety of the festal morn. Not that the mocking Chinaman has much belief in evil spirits, lie l0T his firecrackers; he dotes u " mentions the evil spirits by way of an exense for his weakness. In other particulars, tbe people of China display excellent sense at the oeginningoi tne year; tney pay their debts, array themselves in new clothes, and distribute gifts. They make a great point of pay ing their debts, so as toJttart fair with the new year ; and if any man is so unhappy as to be unable to pay all that he owes, he pays as much as be can, aud his creditors are bound in honor and decency not to press him for the rest until the holiday season is over. Kung-ihe! Kung-the!'' says every man to nis mend, when be meets him on New Year's morning. His friend bows low, and repeats the words, "Kungthe! Kungthe!" Tbe meaning is, "I congratulate you," or, as we say, "I wish you a happy New Year." We bow to our readers at this joyful season, and say to each of them, with all sin cerity and heartiness "Kung- she! Kung she !" Selected. A Womaa'a DWeoTtry.
