According to previous announcement quit a aumber of ear huaineaa men convened at the Board of Trade rooms, with gaatlamaa from Ooldaboro and Chariots, yesterday. Tha meeting was called to order by J as. A. Bryaa who briefly explained its object. A permanent organization waa made by electing Jaa. A.33ryan chairman and Jos, E. Eobinaon aad H. S. Nunn secre taries. Major John Hughe briefly outlined a plan for extending the A. A N . C. R. a agreed upon by the committee ap pointed by the Board of Trad of New Berne. Col. Wm. Johnson of Charlotte, being called upon for hi views, gave an in teresting description of the country lying between Ooldaboro and Charlotte and beyond the latter point, and gav strong reasons why the Slate should consent and aid ia an extension of the A. A N. C. R- to that point. This brought on a lively discussion, which lasted for two or three hour and was participated in by Major Hughe, Col. Johnson, J. J. Wolfenden, Jo. E. Robinson, Capt. S. H. Oray, J. C. Whitty. K. R Jone, Dr. W. II. U. Cobb, J s A Bryan, Esq., and other. There was no dispute about the oeces" sity and practicability of an ei tension, but how it ahould be done and what plan the General Assembly and the stockholder, ot the road weuld accept wre the topica discussed. The sal of tbe State's stock to the C. F. A Y. V. and an extension of tbe road itself by private subscription and a re mortgage of tbe present road were the main poiata at Usue, and without coming to any definite conclusion the meeting ad j turned to ? JO p. m. The meeting convened sgain at 7.30 p. m. The plans for extension of the A. N. C. R. submitted by Mpr Hughe and Col. W. Johnson were again taken up, and the one submitted by Col Johnson was adopted. This plan is to be tubmitted to a general meeting to be held in Raleigh on the 29th of January at 13 o'clock, at which meeting all the friends of extension are invited to at tend or send delegates, and tbe private stockholders are specially requested to be present. On motion the meeting adjourned The Way to the Waat. The Wilmington Messenger which take a lively interest in all that con oerns every section of North Carolina, in apeaking of the difficulties in tbe way of New Berne' progress, lays: New Berne ocoopiea the same position at the head of tbe great inland system of navigation the ound of North Carolina aa Chicago with reference to the great lakea. She ia the natural grannary of aiarg and important por tion of North fJarolina. But she is hemmed in and cut off. Sh cannot distribute her cereal collections through the interior of the State, and ber trade suffer, and tha farmer of the East, who are ber customers, suffer. There is but one remedy.' That lies in a coast line of railroad to Wilmington, once the principal market of the grain that accumulate at new Berne rrom Hyde and the other "North counties." Wilmington and New Berne are mutu ally interested in a line of direct com munication; and intermediate between the two lies Onslow county, ready aad anxious to assist in the construction of a road nailing the two oitiea. We are read down here, and. only await the aotioa of the New Berneans, to begin operation. If they do not move soon, we may begin anyhow, with reference to a connection of our own with Ons low. But why don't the people of New Berne move ? The road would certain ly bond for money enough to pay the cost of it construction, and there are surely men of energy and means in New Berne to set such an enterprise on it feet. Once to New Berne the road would go on to Washington, and bring these two cities in communication with the Albemarle counties. There are tbe re source of Urge bnsinesa for both. Wil mington would than be tha dep water outlet for Eastern Carolina, from the Albemarle to the (Jape Fear, v . Bight here) 1 the connection with Gap Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway that New Berne and Eastern Carolina want. , I , Ws are anxious for the road from thit city to Wilmington but we are alto anxious for an extension of tbe A. at N.C.R. ; - We hope the. lime 1 not far distant wheat w Will have both.
