Hi E-mAika on the A. ft V. C. K
la his meaaag Oovtraor Scales speaks
v. w A- Ufc A. . VS. - mU V A KU.IUU VI ;
the K. C. R. , and says the two should
ever be severed . '
Theoretically the two rodt may be J
on, but if the Governor had been n- j
gaged in busioea or traveled much on .
lb is end of it for the last ten years he
would know that practically they are
a distinct and separate as the Hudson j
and Mississippi river. It any one
wants to go from this end of the road to
Raleigh or aay point west of Ooldsboro
they have to start from this end and
start again when they get to Ooldsboro.
Vow cannot buy a ticket nor check a
trunk further than Ooldsboro, and as
for doing any business west of that
point u is absolutely forbidden unlet
at a loos.
In speaking of this matter we like to
show the practical workings of thee
two roads that should never be severed,
and when we give the fact if any man
says they are not already severed we
will give it up and acknowledge the
(Governor's superior wisdom. A mer
chant in this city buys cotton presses
from a manufacturer in Charlotte, the
western termyius of the two one road
in which the State owns large interest,
but in order to get but cotton presses
here he is compelled to ship them over
the Carolina Central to Wilmington,
tbence over the W. ft W. to Ooldsboro,
and thence to New Berne. This is but
one of many instances. Formerly our
mill men furnished meal, corn and
feed to Ualeigh and other points along
the N.C. R , but now they are prohibit
ed, though the A. ft N. C is but an ei
tension of the former road.
The Governor cannot, perhaps. pr
vent this stale of affairs, but why deny
that they exist. The lime was when
this extension, as he calls it, could hv
been relieved of the drawback upon its
business, bui tbe Gtvernor was unequal
to tbe task , he did not seize the oppor
tunity to relievs his eastern constituents
of tbe burden I hi, t has borne them
down and destroyed their business.
The opportunity was in securing the
Smlthfield road and pushing it on west
ward into counties that ate without
railroad facilities and need tbe corn,
fish and oysters of the east.
But ths Governor ha great consola
tion in the hope of the A. ft N. C. pay
ing a dividend soon. The debt of the
road ha been increased, according to
hi statement, about one hundred and
thirty thousand dollar in order to put
it in condition; afew speculator have
purchased stock for the purpose of
speculation, and caused it to advance,
and the Oovernor at once thinks there
is hope of a dividend in the near future.
The truth is, the A. ft N. C. R. is no
nearer paying a dividend than it was
the day Oovernor Scale wa inaugu
rated. In order to pay a dividend a
railroad, like every other business,
must make something to pay it with.
If the Oovernor will take the pain to
examine the earning of the A. & N. C.
R. in 1884-85 and compare them with
any year since that time, he will find
that there has not been much if any
increase. And perhaps too he is not
awaf of the fact that firs or six mile
of new steel rail were put down in
1884-85, strictly ovt of the earning of
the road.
Now In view of the fact that the
Oovernor ha had the road put in fint
o)as condition and baa had it under a
splendid business management, and yet
it earning are not much in advance if
aay of former years, where is his hope
of a dividend V
The idea advanced by the Oovernor
that for twelve year longer the R. ft
D. R. shall be permitted to come around
to onr back door and drain our territory
of its products, bringing them around
to oar front door, In order to see wheth
er or not the N. C. R. will want it ex
tension ths A. ft N. 0. R., is almost
intolerable.
The General Assembly and Governor
Fowle will be asked to allow the people
along the line and tributary to the A. ft
N. C. B. to unshackle themselves, and
we hope that they will give theme
patient hearing, notwithstanding Gov.
Scales' hops of a dividend.
Orient i Samoa to Protect American
Interests.
Washington. January 14 Th Sec
retary of the Navy has iesued instruc
tion to Rear Admiral Nimherly, com
manding tbe Pacifio station, to proceed
ta the U. B. B. Trenton to Samoa for
the purpose of protecting American ta-
teresu on mat island. Tbe Trenton
was at Panama at last accounts watch
ing th progress of avent on the Ith
muw. She will be relieved at Panama
by the Vaadalia, and probably the Mo
hloan, and the U. 8, 8, Atlanta, now fit
ting Mt at Mew York, will probably be
ordered to take the station en the At
lantio aide near Aspiawall. There is
considerable apprehension of trouble
on the Isthmus, and it has been deemed
advisable to have some naval vessel
there as soon as possible. . : v' -
