The omission, on our part, was not discovered until after our paper was published. n i i 1 Mayor Glenn, of Atlanta, said the other day in bit inaugural address: "Atlanta has safely passed all the experiments to which she baa been subjected and is now on the threshold of a grand career. If her people realizing her pofsi bilities, are true to her bett interests and join hands in pushing forward ber progress, nothing stands in the way or a population of a quarter of a million happily homed in the most substantial and beautiful city in this country." The way to overcome opposition to tbe public schools is to enlighten the jublic mind and to make them a source of pride to tbe people. It is au eternal fact that other things being equal an educated man has a very reat advantage over an illit erate man. As a factor in develop ing the resources of the State an edacated man is worth quite twice as much as an uwdncated one. It . will pay the State in the end to have its citizens, fairly well edu cated. To the Editor of te Meatnger The hutldtag of the Onflow and East Caro lina Railroad from Wilmington to New Berne would undoubtedly inure more to the benefit of Wilmington than aay scheme ever before projected. Thi may teem a broad assertion in tbe face of the fine result of all cur railroad enterprises, yet I think the as tertloa susceptible of demonstration. OOICHAHDIXO P06ITIOH OF BTW BI&.NI. Want of proper outlet to the sea ha alotj prevented New Berne trem being aot only the metropolis of tbe Slate, but also a city of much importance, eituated at the ju notion of the Neue and Trent river, which there form a hay that a few mile below merge into the Pamlico Sound, with a close and complete connection wiih Albemarle Sound. In fact, for commercial pur poses tbe wbole or our sound system may be considered a one body of in land water. I take it that the position of New Berne, accompanied with suffi cient depth of water at Hatterat, would undoubtedly command the oommsree of the Sound. A U Is, New Berne' outlet is practically at Norfolk. In fact Norfolk, in all time past, ha had a comp!te monopoly of the Sound trade, and all that portion of Eastern Carolina bordering on the Sound and their trib utary streams, and a most profitable trade it has been to her. For a long time her connection with the Sounds was by way of Dismal Swamp and Al bemarle and Chesapeake canals; but she found it to her interest to buila a railroad to KJenton, via Eliztbetb City, seventy flTe mile. WHAT NEW UERNK ANl EASTEKN 1KO UN A RKND TO NORFOLK . In order that she msy obtain the trade of a large portion of the Albemarle and Pamlico trade, Wilmington proposes to enter the list of competition wiih Nor- rolk. If as has been ofiloially stated at New Heme there are from 50,000 to 60,000 bales of cotton sent annually to Norfolk from New Berne, which lies at the soutbtrn end of the Hounds, what must there be from the Pamlico and Tar river, from Washington and from the Roanoke, at Plymouth, and other points on the Sounds? Am I out of the way in saying that there are 100 000 bales marketed from that territory',-' I think not. WII.MIXOT'N COULD ll'MPETK WITH NORKoLK Now, the Wilmington, Onslow and East Carolipa Railroad will reach New Bern with 90 miles of railroad, taking in the rich and valuable territory of Onslow and Jones oountlet, together with Orant townahip, which of itself will maintain a well payina road. That fthie road to New river, in Onslow oounty, will soon be built, ia now, I think, an assured fact; the balance will tureiy follow. When we Up the Sound at New Berne, then the competition with Norfolk will begin. Wilmington's chances will constat of a tingle trusk line of 90 mile length, a cotton market equal to that of Norfolk in any reipect, in torn superior, and a harbor of suffi cient depth of water to float and load steamer of 2.000 tons burthen. WILMIMINOTON WOULD HAVE THE AD VANTAGE. Norfolk, to reach New Berne, by the shortest possible route will have to traverse the entire length of the two sound, which cover nearly one half the water front of tbe State, and then most need be transported by rail some fifty odd miles from Elizabeth City to her door. On which side will the advan tages and facilities for transportation lie r I have already observed that a a cotton market Wilmington is at least at good as Norfolk, if not better. We must have that cotton. But the cotton trade, valuable as it is, is not by any mean all that we expect to reach by this connec tion. The sources of trade there are many. I will instance the grain trade. EASTERN CAROLINA AS A GRAIN SECTION. Sixty years ago, North Carolina ranked as the third grain State in the Union, and it was the product of the sound regions that made her such. Albmarle and Pamlico sounds are bordered by 15 of the richest counties in the State, and I doubt if for grain growing purposes they are surpassed anywhere. The aggregate products of these ocuptlet must be estimated by th -millions b'uthelt of wheat, rice and corn annually produced there. Our Eastern com is famous along the South.. Atlantio coast, and most of it formerly found Its way to Southern ports try. small craa to , Wilmington. Charleston,' Savannah, &e., but still a large quantity was always marketed at Norfolk.; Wilmington is a large buyer oi com. rronaniy rrom one to one and a quarter millions of bnabsls are an nually breught here for noma ooctump tiqn ana to furnish the cotton and tor Dentins counties which look to us for their sappiies. Wilmington now has to pay a large prlos for the corn she bur. moat of it comlog hers by rail from Chickgo. ' Consequently ahe ean onlr tel to her Immediate customer, and is prevented from extending hr terri tory ey . being loads down with the heavy cost of transportation she bat to carry on every bnshet of oorn she buys. With cheap transportation from New Berne and the sounds, however. Wil mlngton would become a large die tributinsj faint, not only for hone ds- manoi bat foreign points also. f ? if afttar bams st bail.' . To show the difficulties wndsr which we now Isbor this table of rates speaks for Itself: ' ... , , . A Bailroad Commission The Man for the Position. Thoroughly impressed with the grav ity of the business connected with the Railroad Commission which will engage the attention of our rppresentatives, we ill offer no apology for the suggestion we shall make to them as to the appoint ment of tbe Commission. Every mem ber of that Commission should be a man of tbe highest character for integrity and honor, of large experience in busi ness affairs, of treat dignity of deport ment and personal character, of mature age, Of legal attainments, of a lofty patriotism that embraces every interest of North Carolina, and especially of personal Integrity that Is as pure and incorruptible as the icicle on Diana temple. Fora place on that Board, when it is created, as it probably will be, we de sire to present as a representative from Eastern North Carolina, the name of Major John Hughes, of New Berne, as possessing all the rare qualifications for the position, and we regard it as fortun ate for tbe State that he has but lately retired from the Presidency of tbe National Bank of New Berne, which he has held for 21 years with such eminent ability and usefulness. With two such colleagues on the Commission from Central and Western North Carolina, the Legislature will nave acquitted it self wsll for ear dear old State and will entitle itself 'to the commendation of every patriotlo soo.E.
