BHAXl THE ITAT1 AHD PEOPLE SXTEEXHDEB, OB Belie the Opportunity to free Them selves From the Power of Mo nopoly t The recent aeetiog at Raleigh by the friends and enemiee of the extension of the A. 4N.C. B. was not altogether an unprofitable one, not withstand m g nothing definite and certain wae done to accomplish the purpose for which the Meting wae called. Business men of Charlotte and New Bene were bronchi face to face end post comparing notes found that they held about the aane relations towards the railway corporations operating in this State. New Berne business suffers because it cannot extend beyond Oolds boro; our products are virtually pro hibited from being carried into the in terior of the Bute and we are denied the privilege of dealing with our own Uellow-citizens of the same common wealth. The oombtnatiop of railway interest at Charlotte ie exacting and compelling the buainete men ef that thriving city to pay tribute to the tune of about one hundred thousand dollars tjreetsive freight chargti annually . To remedy these evils and to enable the State of North Carolina to hold these powerful corporations in check, a plan for extending the A. & N R. was discussed and formulated, but th enemy was there end partially suc ceeded in preventing the plan even being submitted to the General As sembly. Hut we hope that it will yet be submitted and if thoroughly under stood by the members of that body not one who is a true friend to his State will oppose it Here are the outlines of the plan proposed : 1st. Amend the ihirterof the A S N. C. It authorising its extension through tbe countue of Johnson, liar nett, Moore, Montgomery, Stanly and Cabarrus to Charlotte in Mecklenburg 2d. In order to ratee means for con struct ing saM sxtension the capital stock of the company ia to be increased not more than six hundred thousand dollars. (The amount is thus limited in order that tbe State may still own a majority of tbe stock). 3d. To further enable the company to raise funds for tbe extension and to pay off the present indebtedness it it authorised to mortgage the entire line from Morehead City to Charlotte and leeue bonds, bearing not more than six per cent, per annum, to an amount not to exceed eight thousand dollars per mile, and these not to be iseued until five hundred thousand dollars of the in creased capital has been taken by bona fide subscribers. Under this plan the State's interest will be safe, and the Atlantic Road will be in batter condition to receive the N. C. R. at the expiration of the R. & D. lease than it will if it simply drags along as a local road. The additional subscription of five hundred thousand dollars will grade the extension from Qoldsboro to Charlotte, then by mortgag ing the entire line sufficient funds can be raised to thoroughly equip and put it iejflrst olsss running order. It is urged upon the part of tbe enemies of extension, though they pro fess to be great friends to it, that tbe additional mortgage would jeopardize the State's interest in that it might not be able to earn money enough to pay the interest on the bonds and a fore closure would follow. Any one at all acquainted with the resoarcee of the country through which the extension will pass, and the amount of freights paid at Charlotte over present linet, ill not doubt for a moment that it will not only be able to pay interest on at least two millions of bonds, but will pay a dividend In addition. We are told by the Charlotte merchants that they pay over five hundred thousand dollars at the R. & D. warehouse and over three hundred thousand dollars at the C. C. warehouse annually totincontmg freight alone. It is safe to say that at reaspn- eelo raise Charlotte alone would pay out; eight hundred thousand dollars annually,' aad the Allan Uo Road could safely coast on er least one-fourth of this, because being the nearest route to water; the freights could be carried by way ot New Berne and Morehead City from all points North as cheap or cheeper than any other line can dare to carry them. The scheme is plausible end if carried into operation will wen the N. O. B. comes back to the State enable It to bid deflaace to all the giant corporations combined- We believe New Berne and Morehead City are about the only ports oa . the' Atlantic coast that these great railaoad lines do aot control. There bee ftoea great changes in'railroadlag during the last ten y Bars specially in the South.4 The tendency k to oonsbli date the" North and South lines and make all others subservient to the oom binatioos, and when the "combine" k complete M ere learn U k in Charlotte aow, the people will pay for it. North Carolina has it ia her power, without Incurring One dollar additional debt, to protect her people from the op pression that :tr!y in store for them if these combiija ts go on The A. Si N.C.
