KeBelon nuaaaiKid with the idea that poeny waa the myi terious influence that appealed . beyond all other agencie. to tbe deeper in stinct of oar nature and soothed its turbulent elements. Indeed, he at tributed to th graceful measure of Virgil's verse, together with the tender nees of its sentiment, the consoling suc cess he enjoyed in converting ths Dauphin from th error of his unre strained impulse and 'making him a model of good conduct in after life. Without detracting fur a moment from tbe rhythmic charm of ttm Virgiliao Strophe and its beneficent sway over all it devoted admirers, still it will appear upon reflection that Fsnelon ur in tha cultivation of this exalted branch cf letters only a powerful aid in develop ing the higher imaginative faculties, and in this depriving the ungovernable passions of their deplored impelling force. Now, while it is freely con fessed that the poet ha always wielded power over the minds of men, it ia an historical truth that in the most chival rous periods cf all past chronicles, during the epocha of thn most brilliant achievements in tli progree of evoln- rion from daikueaa to light, tbe potent, utterance of tho pot t reere. invariably, wedded to tha musical numbers of the bard, the troubadour and tbe minstrel. Tbe monotone and the Greek musical modes of the lays of Virgil and Horace gay place in tinie to tbe ambitious ratasuretvof a more tadvsneed art. and a musical spirit infused sll the metrical opinions of tbe wandering singers who were tbe depositories of their respective people's traditions and contributed, in no small degree, to the formation of a national sentiment. Ia these days of positivism, where ell our, conviotions are subjected to (hs cnaoiil iiestof ex periment, tbe rule of the imagination, in a poetio sense, is practically discard ed, and groveling prose is assumed td be the only medium through which sci enoeand art can be-imparted.- But the murmurs r;disoontnt arebooming more ominous every day with this cold inflexible method of communicating knowledge. Tbe circle of true science ie, it is felt, lacking in an important segment. Education, in the f alines of its meaning, must develop another faculty of tbe mind and cultivate the emotional aids of our nature, through a proper play of tbe imagination. Where in this complex civilieitionjof ours shall we look for a purer, more delightful, more helpful hand-maid for our intel lectual and moral elevation, than we can find in the study of mnsio ( It s at once an art and a science, and it has tbe divine attribute of not being susceptible of debasement.
