Senator Lucas on ths Commission Bill. Of the msny advocates of the railroad commission bill in tbs Senate, the peo ple had no warmer or more zealous frisnd than Ssnator Lucas of tbe seoond d istrict. Hs, like thousands of others in Eastern Carolina, can see no good rea son why Raleigh should eat oorn from Kansas instead of from the eastern counties, or why the railroad trafflo of North Carolina should be regulated by Sol. Haas in Richmond. We copy a portion of his ipeeoh as published in ths Nsws and Observer: Mr. Lucas said as a businsss man and a farmer he desired to ssy a fsw words on the pending bill. He was not at war with the railroads, us favored tbe prosperity of every road already built and hundreds of others which he hoped to see built, and he had their best in tereets truly at heart. He would not say one word to damage them, but there should be a medium between them and tbe toiling masses of the people. The bill nnder consideration was only to regulate freight and pas senser tariffs witnin tne state, ins rates are now reculatea in norm Usr olina. Ia it done by a North Carolina railroad commission? Nol They, are regulated by kr. Sol. Haas of Rioamond, Va. He regulatee tne rate lor nearly every pound of freight on railroads in North Carolina. Have theee Senators the intereete of North Carolina at heart Of course they have. Now why do the people of Raleigh and Charlotte eat oorn from the State of BUnsaa? He said Senators had said they woald not be controlled by the clamor of newspa Dsoers. Ho would ask them if they did not desire, daring the political campaign, to have newspaper clamor for the interests of the dsmoc ratio party ana inaiviauai interests, tie would be governea ana oontreuea oy the olamor oi an noneat, nara working cor-stttnsncy, who, by their luffragss. bad sent him to the Senate of north Carolina to look after their and the State's beet interests. He had talked with many North Carolinians aad every one had expressed himself for such a bill as the one now nnder considera tion. Senator Vance had told him that it would be a great mistake for the democratic party to fail to create a railroad commission. Senators on this floor were circumscribed by senatorial districts bnt Vance was North Carolina at large and had ever been found doing and advising3that which was for the prosperity and best interests of North Carolina, rime nnnarea petitions rep reeenting 60,000 of the beet -people of the State are calling for the enaotment of such a law as this bill creates. He wanted the bill to pass and no fooling about it. ' Funny : Very, Very Tunny. "It is better to laugh than be sighing" says the old song, and that such Is the opinion entertained by the generality of mankind. The large audience every where attracted to witness that most laughable of oomedies, "Skipped by the light of the Moon," woald seem to abundantly prove.
