There will be mirth, music, fun, song and dance in lavish profusion at tbe Theatre tonight and all who desire to pass a pleasant evening and exercite ull care, should not fail to be present ml witness the many good things erved up in that ne plus ultra of funny plays, "Skipped by the Light of the Moon," of which the Philadelphia Led- er says: 'One might as well hope to success fully photograph a laugh as to describe Skipped by tbe Light of the Moon. Its sole object ia to raise a breeze, and the breeze which baa been raised by it has got quite beyond control, and grown to an unmanageable magnitude of a cy clone. Tbe most imperturbable nature goee down before it without a show of resistance, and everybody rolls and shakes and laughs. No Legislation Necessary. Since oalling attention to the impor tance of having an act passed by the General Assembly to authorize the United States to purchase a lot in this city for the purpose of erecting a publio building, we find upon examination that the General Assembly passed a general act in 1887 authorizing such purchase anywhere in North Carolina. So th only thing necessary now is for Unci Sam to com on, purchase a site and put up the building. to step to the front and announce his programme. : - BBSBBSsssaaBJsasmsswflSSSBssi py Tour Taxes J! The Progressive Farmer is throwing soma hot shot at the Senators who de feated th railroad commission bill. In the last Usae of that really progressive papr Senator Kerr of Sampson is taktn to task in the following manner : During the discussion of the railroad commission In th Senate, numerous thrusts were made at tbe Alliance, which always elicited applause or ap proval irom tne political "oiaekers" ia the lobbies, it was repeated ly charged that th sentiment among th Alliens man had bn "manufactured" and "worked up," etc. Senator Kerr, who was the acknowledged ohamoion of the railroads, was particularly happy along this line. ,. We eoold not answer the Senator on th floor of the Senate, out we propose to put aim and those who acted with him on the witness- stand aad empannsl their constituents u jurors snd ask some Questions. Sen ator Kerr and all of them asserted that a Commission could not affect the four old roads. So says Representative Stevens, who voted for it. So says one thousand Allianoe men of Sampson. Whioh is right? Why ar they "overwhelmingly for the bill?" Let na look at some facts. Take the W. &W.B.R., one of the beat and cheapest in the Stat. Will the Senator tell his constituent that they are not discriminated against in the following figures taken from their schedule of rates? For a car load of guano (20 tons) shipped from Wilmington to Warsaw, 53 miles, they charge $40; Wilmington touttnton, the senator's home, $40. Will he tell them why they should, bay 18 for. a ear from Warsaw to Clinton, IS miles, and Tar boro only pays tt on the ear, 13 miles? Will he tell them why they pay $5 for 13 miles, while Scotland Neck pays only $1 tor 10 miles? tWill he tell them why Wileon pays 47 for 109 miles aad Fay ftsvllle pays only 140 for 18 miles? The claim of Carson before the Su preme Court of Massachusetts Was that the purchase by Dunham of the mortgage was merely colorable, and that he should be restrained because of decisions in cases heretofore heard show that the courts of South Carolin and, the Supreme Court of the United States, do not agree as to the law. The Supreme Court;, of Massachusetts de oideaitwill not interfere, a there is no evidsnoe that Dunham's purchase Of the mortgage was not bona fiat, and and it is the opinion of the court that the oase can be properly determined ia the courts of Sooth Carolina.
