Last Sunday we apoke of Walker" Blaine as Walter How this ia to say to all the Walters that .nothing unkind to them was Intended. The new legal adviser of the State Department is Walker Blaine, not Walter. " Mr. Northern papers are call log the killing of Captain Dawson " characteristic Southern out rage." It Is no more characteristic Of the South than of New England. Good citizens everywhere deplore .the occurrence and denounce the crime. Those students of American politics who find little that is pleas ant or consoling in the contempla tion of recent election contests have been greatly Impressed with, the idea that the addition of four new i States to the Union will deprive New Tdrk hereafter of Its power -as ' the great pivotal State. N. T. Snn, - protectionist; y , - V.Jl is; reported "thata there is a " tiharn- disagreement between Sec - tetarv Blaine in regard to the ' ' English Mission. New is to go to Austria, The adjournment of the Senate until Monday upset a thousand calcula tions and made those nervous who supposed jesterday that their men roold go in today. Apropos to the rather lancifnl discussion in the Federal Senate with respect to the annexation of Canada a Canadian paper wants to know wb,v 5,000,000 Canadians should pay more to be governed than 00,000,000 Americans pay t We give it up, though it may be that it is because of the large pro portion of escaped boodle aldermen who understand thoroughly the act of governing at greatest cost to the people. News and Observer. J. E. Boyd, the well known Re publican politician of North Caro lina, met Major Batterworth in the Kbbitt last night : "North Caro lina does uot saem to be eetting much out of this administration." said the Major to Boyd. '-No," re plied Boyd, "but it is getting about as much as Ohio. I think we shall havelo join forces and get these two States admitted into the Uuion " They joined. Washing ton I'ost. It is already evident that Mr. larrison will be the President of a party, rather than the Chief Magis trate of the whole country. The utimation that he would make no appoiutment, except on the recom mendation of the Republican mem bers of Congress from the district to which the applicant belong, or, in the absence of such member, upon the recommendation of snch trusted party leader, indicates plainly enough the lines npon which the spoils are to be distributed. Manney at Beaufort St. Patrick ' day this year w a more universally observed than it has been fer several it was Sunday. There ia no us talking. A man who can't make a living in New Berne would starve in the np country in persimmon time. Two office on South Front street are being put in order for new occupants. These are not government offices, how ever. We do say without fear of successful contradiction that a family oan live bet ter in New Berne than anywhere else at the same cost. Dill and Gorman's Specialty Com pany combined with Prof. Johnson's Royal Marrionett will be at the opera nous Thursday night. Kinston is moving for a knitting factory. The monied men of the town are not waiting for some one else to oome, but are going to put their own money in it. A change in the board of directors of the National Bank occurred recently, Mr. Washington Bryan having resigned and Mr. Oeo. H. Roberts being elected to fill the vacancy. The weather on Sunday was out of oharacter with the 17th of March a beautiful spring-like day throughout nstead of the blustering weather for hich it is generally noted . There will be a meeting of the stock holders of the E. C. F. O. O. & I. Aeeo- ial ion tonight at the rooms of the Y. M. C. A. at 7 SO o'clock. All members are requested to be present. We could not be better pleased with postofflce officials than we are with the preeent occupants, but if Democrats have to hustle, we will welcome Mr. Clarke. The meeting at the Baptist Church continues to increase in interest. Last night Mr. Dill preached a powerful sermon on sin as illustrated in leprosy. Several persons manifested a desire to be saved. Service will continue through the week conducted by Mr. Dill at 4 p. m. and 7:45 p. m. daily. A meeting of the Board of Trad and citizen was held last night to hear the report of the oosnmittee to raise one thousand dollars bonus for a factory. Here We Are. It ha been astonishing in the past that there has been so little businets push in New Berne in fu ture the surprise will be that she has accomplished so much. What other town has suoh a prospect? If there is one we don't know it. Wil mington has more shipping just now, and we wish she had ten times a much aa in has. Charlotte, has moremanu- factoriee, and we would gladly see them qudrapled; buftheasy Ie coming when the chipping of New Berne will be equal to that of Wilmington and her menu factories ixoeed those of Charlotte. We de not intend to compete with Durham ia the making of cigarett,f or cigarette smoking is a bad habit and we don't i n tend to encourage it. But in alt health: giving, wealth-producing, civilising and christianizing enterprises we intend to be leaders. The railroad officials inform us that for some days past the negro exodus movement has not been so heavy. The Riohmond & Danville and the Coast Line have both withdrawn the special rates and colored emigrants now have to pay full rates. -The public school matter wih prob ably culminate in a mass-meeting of citizens for the purpose of raising sub scriptions to pay up the expenses of the schools and continue them longer.
