JtW BXHNX. N. 0.. MARCH 31 1889. gateiedet the Foal oOUa at N Bt. iun. K 0 CANADA. The tabject of the annexation of Canada to the United SUtes is mired by tbe President's Behring Sea proclamation. It it to be expected that the proclamation will produce agita tion in England and Canada, bat we trust that the conservatism, that baa ao often come to the rescue of Paace. will again exert it benefi cent influence. That there is a party in Canada desiring nnion with these State?, and a correspondine party in tbe United States in favor of Canadian annexation, has long been evident Intensely Ameiican having tbe fullest confidence in the future of this continent, hnmblv desinnz to contribute to the splendors that await the pro gressive development of this Western World, e are neverthe less opposed to Canadian annexa tion, and much more are we opposed to Canadian conquest. Whatever may be the sentiment of others, we take no pleasure in the triumph of the strong over the weak; and the fact that the United States is able to throw a million of men into Canada, and add an em pire to the national domain, weighs no more with the Journal than it does in the scales of Justice and Bight. If the proclamation accords with treaty stipulations, or if it was i a i issued in vindication of the inalien able rights of citizsns of this country, it must be sustained, without measuring the responsibil ity or counting the cost. Annexa tion can have no place in present complications, but may come as a necessary seqnence. Should Canada decide to dissolve the political bonds that unite her ti England, and to provide new lafe-guards for her future security ; id, in the exercise of her inalien able rights, declare her indepen deace and ask for admission into the Union, it would be the part of wisdom to consider her application in the spirit of enlightened states manship. Until that time comes, let os assure Canada of our friend ship, and follow the assurance with a public policy that will make more cordial and intimate the commercial and personal relations between the citizens of the respective countries l'hen, at the proper time, the nnion - will be affected through the influ ences of mutual attachments and interests rather than by the con quests of arms. , AToea. Tbe obiect was to see If this material would not act bene ficially injkkeeping down weeds. According to Professor E. S. CorTs report on the same, it has done this in a marked degree, but this is not all. The yield from the plant has been more abundant than from another bed of the same va riety that last received excellent culture of the ordinary kind. The plants have been almost entirely free from blight, though the Sharp less blights badly here when grown in the ordinary way. The bed has received no culture since the mulch ing, except to remove the weeds that were! strong enough to grow through the three inches of coal ashes. THKIB BfJSHKSS BOOMING. The most violent passions and excitements or mind cannot pre serve even powerful minds Irom sleep: thus Alexander the Great slept on tbe field of Arbela, and Napoleon npon that of Ansterlitz. Even stripes and torture cannot keep off sleep, as criminals have been known to sleep on the rack. Noises which tX first serve to drive away sleep, soon become Indiapen sable to its existence: thus a stage coach stopping to change horses wake all the passengers. The proprietor of an iron forge, who slept close to the din or nam mer, forges and' blast-furnaces, would wake 11 there was any inter ruption to them daring the night; and a sick miller, who had his mills stopped on T that account,' passed sleepless sight! until tba mm re gamed its usual noise. Homer, in his Iliad, elegantly represents sleep as forercoming ail men, ana even the gods, except Jnpiter aione; ; , m m m ' ' '.- -t -."
