Thomas Canady make complaint that he is not treated fairly and justly by the city in taking a portion of his lot for George street. We have been tl sured by Councilman Williams that every effort waa made to obtain suffl cient width of the street at a fair prioe, but it waa impossible to do so, and the city was forced to condemn it and have damages assessed by a Jury as tbe law require. The ilm was not furnished u from JCinatoa bnt the report waa circulated in this cur, and we took, an we thought, all necessary precaution to ascertain whether or not it wa true. and after hearing it from what we con sidered a very reliable eource, we ac cepted it a true and published it as a matter of news. We most humbly beg pardon of Miss Henderson and Mr. Woo ten, and feel sure that they would grant it if they kbew how w e obtained tSe Information, Glanders at Wilmington. Our friends in Wilmington are in the midst of an epidtmic among the horses. Dr. Wrsy. a veterinary surgeon of Bal timore, in the employ of the i . M. government, has visited the city and pronounced tbe disease glanders. The Review ?: Dr. wray found tnat the diseax wa the genuine glanders but hopes that we may be able soon to stamp it out. It is an incurable disease, and is dangerous alike to man and beast to the latter, we take it. in the way of pyaemia, or blood poisoning, by in introduction to the human system through abrasions of the skin. Liter reports in tint Htar and Mes senger say there are no more new case. A Merited Compliment. Ilro. Creecy, of the Economist, in a recent number of that paper, comment ing on the paucity of Republican ma terial in the South, and especially in North Carolina, from which President Uarrisod might select a member of his Cabinet, says: "There ia no Republican in North Carolina of whom we know or hare heard that could begin te fill the place except Judge Seymour, of New Berne, and he is too level headed to swap hi preieat judicial life tenure for a place that will become vacant in four year." A very deserved compliment and one which bis fellow-townsmen appreciate. A Complaint. EditoS Jotjriiai,: Permit me to say through the columns of paper a few words relative to the moving of houses situated on George street. It is said that the city laws demanded 17 feet of our property for the macademized road. I never was willing to this per petration upon the citieens living in that part of the city. But as they said it was city laws, and it looks quite strange too, as we have been considered living in the rural district, that the citv authori ties wereV) anxious In getting 17 feet of our property after we have paid for it. But any way we gave up on con ditions, and they are these: That they would repair all damages. We have been waiting upon them patiently for nine days aner tbey have not done one iota relitivn ia avraemnnta. Kn nnr property In this pari of ,tb city cost us f rem T W to 3.W peridot. This fifty Cents per foot waa first inaugurated by the trustees of Bethel ohureh, anl all the rest of the property along the line had to come down to the fancy figures set by the above named trustees; and I venture to say that not one or those venerable trustees own, petsonally, any property in this section. Now we are suffering on account of our chimneys being down, and we earnestly hope that tbe city fathers will do better i the future than they have in the past in keeping their agreements; and build the ohimneys run the fences on the line of the 17 feet, of which we agreed for the road, and underpin our houses, and pay damages. .YovjsFor the Bight, . , K .. & j TBOMAs CAftAnr, 'Hew Berne'rN.C;, "April 18, 18OT; A Card. Printer' ink in tbe medium that has been used all over the world for many years aa a general mean of advertising. When tbe art of advertising was in its infancy and men were less informed than i hey are at present any tort of ad vertising matter was read because peo ple had more time to read it, but now the world has a great deal more to do. increase of population has given each person more work to perform as a necessary mean of tuceess, or even subsistence. To bring about more than ordinary success business people have bestirred themselves to put ther differ ent' lines of merchandise before the world in as attractive manner as pos sible, and competition ba made it to that now to even keep pace with those who surround us it is an unquestionable necessity that a man advertise. Not only with individuals is this a necessary adjunct to success, but with States, cities, towns, localities also hai it become a matter of self-preservation We. hardly question tbe fact that we must progress or not, and eo long as we progress be it even eo little we can feel encouraged. Our city is surrounded by natural advantages that are unquestionably su perior to many other localities that have prospered far more than we have, and which are still advancing rapidly to still greater prominence. The tide has turned southward. By waiting and biding one time the future may of necessity discover us to some inquiring settler looking about for undeveloped fields,' but we, the present generation in the mean time have passed into ob livion unknown and unsought. TO remedy this is one thing needful nd with the young men of our com munity rests the responsibility. Tbe example of man is tbe world that forms publio opiuion, and tbe young! men sit quietly and selfishly down on their resources of health and energy and are indisposed to work beoause the result may benefit some one who will not lend a helping band, then there can be no progress. All should be upend doing. Do not be extravagantor lavish of expenditure but be Careful and just in your gener osity, o If all would do a little towards talking and backing 'New Berne up, pnl out so tnuoh money as he can afford and say ,a good - word whenever it is possible, a very appreciable result would soon be observed.
