Editor Journal: As today the whole American nation has, by com mon consent and at the request of the chief magistrate of our country, been engaged in prayer, I will, with your permission give a brief account of tbe first prayer in Congress, as I learned it as will be seen below. BJtTHACT rROM A LETTER f BOM rUlLADEL- PH1A. 1883. Another venerable institution that I have always slighted in my visits here waa called at today, that is "Carpenter's Hall. This building is well preserved and has tbe appearance of being still in use as a meeting place for tbe Society of Carpenters, which was organized in 24. Among the relics of interest here is an engraving representing "the first prayer in Congress" with a letter press disoription ot it, and bow it oame about. Massachusetts Bay was invaded and the town of Boston thought to have been destroyed by the British forces. In their consternation and helplessness, a member arose and moved that some minister be requested to attend the next morning'e session and adrress a petition to the Throne of Grace. Two membors objeoted, one from Massachu setts, I think, and the other from South Carolina; uot because they did not be lieve in the propriety of it, but the inex pediency on account of the difference in the religious faith of the members. There were, they said, members who were Episcopalians, Presbyterians. An- nabaptist, Congregationaliat and Qtiak ers; and they thought it objectionable to introduce any form of worship not agreeable to all. Some one, of the fun- tan faith I believe, stated that he was willing to hear any man of a Uodly character and upright life offer prayer, and that be understood, one Mr. Duche, an Episcopal minister, was sucb a man, and therefore moved that a com mittee be appointed to wait upon that gentleman and request his presence for that purpose on tomorrow. Ibe com mittee wss appointed and returned tbe reply from Mr. Duohe that if his health would permit, he would surely be pres ent. At the hour of meeting he waa present with his clerk and in his- cleri cal robes. De read the Psalter for the 7th day of the month, morning prayer, whioh was the SSth and 86th Psalm, and proceeded with the prayer from the prayer book of the Church of England. But bavins: finished such or tne collects as he could appropriately use on the oo oasion, he closed the book and led eff in a most impreesive extemporized prayer, especially invoking Divine assistance and blessings upon tbe congress, and protection to Massachusetts Bay and the town of Boston then under sore trials and afflictions. The picture represents the congress in the attitude of prayer; some are stand ing, and others kneeling;one old friend with his hat on. But the earnest coun tenances and devout appearance of all the members would compare favorably with that of any congress of the present day, no doubt. C. Notice.
