Quite a crowd gathered at the corner of Middle and South root streets yes terday to witness the feats of two negroes ho could cut a somersault backwards with perfect ease. We call attention to the notice of agent Henderson, of the E. C. D. Line to ohange of sohednle, commencing next Monday when the vessels of that line will make four trios per week. The A. ft N. C. We wore shown yesterday by Mrs. Mollis Lwh another lot of beautiful handiwoik by Miss Florence Winfleld, of Chocowiaity, Beaufort oounty. It is imilar to the work she sent for exhibit at the Fair. Miss Win field has been an nvalid for twelve years, and this fact makes ber work the more to be ad mired. It is woollen knit goods, con- isting of eacque, hood and socks, with colors artistically blended. In beauty and ezcollsnce it is hard to beat. A Very Remarkable Occurrence. Last Tuesday, the 30th ult. in Sand Hill township, Lenoir couniy, a little negro boy about four years old, son of Marshall Herring, while playing on the banks of Neuse rirer at Caswell Turn, fell in and drifted down to Terrapin Landing, about two miles below, where he was rescued alive, but badly fright ened.by some hands pulling a seine. After the little African was rescued he walked two miles back home and. ap parently was all 0. exoept a little fatigued from his unexpected ' long walk. Shipping News. General Battle commanded an Alabama brigade in that struggle and ha is fully competent to give an . interesting address on the subject. We urge our friends la the country to ooms to town on that day aad Join in the exercises. It is fitting, right and proper that all should join together on this day and keep green the memory of those who yielded their lives for a cause which we all believed to be right. A SoMiet'a Home. We cheerfully give space to the fol- lowing letter: Charlotte, N. C, April 39. Editors Jocrkal: In furtherance of the scheme undertaken by tbe Wil mington Messenger toward the build ing of a Soldiers' Home, I propose at an early day to request a meeting of the citizens of Charlotte for the purpose of getting from them an expression as to ways, means, feasibility, etc. In addi tion to data that will then bo submitted , it is desired to have also personal leturs from old soldiers giving personal needs, willingness and deairs for such a home. Should you be able either through solic itation or from your own experience to furnish auch information, you will much oblige, ours truly, W. E. Christian, Ed. Demoorat. We hope thero will be a general re sponse to mis request, in wnatever movement is mads for the relief of the Confederate soldier there should be unity, and it is only by an interchange of views on the subject that the right plan can be agreed upon. The Journal has several times given its opinion on the establishment of the Soldier's Home. It is not what North Carolina needs. If there are a number of ex -Con federate soldiers in North Carolina who have no home, no rela tives nor friends with whom they prefer tJ spend their last days, then a home should be provided. But before being provided some estimate should be made of the number who are in this condi tion. But few soldiers are contont at a 'Home." They do not feel like free men at such an institution. Those who are really needy ahculd be given a pen sion that will do tbem some good. The Stats of North Carolina is amply abls to pay the truly needy and worthy ex Confederate a penaion that will put him above suffering for the necessaries of life and at the same time leave him a freeman.
