The course of the torrent from tha broken dam at tba foot of tha lake to Johnatown ia almoet eighteen mile, and, with the exception of at one point, the water passed through a narrow V- for ahaped valley. Four miles below tbe aam lay we towa ox soutn r ora, wnere the South Fork itaelf emptiea into the Conemangh river. Tbe town contained about two thousand inhabitants. It ha not been heard from, but it ia said that four-fifth of it haa been swept away.
