Clay's moderate and sagacious in

the court house and in a few minutes
the large room was wellllUed mostly
by colored people who seemed to mani-1
feat an intense interest In the case. I
The charge against Rev. C. H. Smith I
was that of abandonment. Ith.. been
but about two months since Smith was I
married in pompous style, driving to 1
the depot with carriage and four, fol-
lowed tav other carriages.-when he and
bride departed on their bridal tour.
Upon their return a grand reception I
was held at the elegant new residence I
of his brother, Isaac H. Smith. He has
been pastor of .St. Peter's A. M. E. Z. I
Church for three years past. It is per-
haps the largest or next to the largest I
congregation of colored Christians in
the city and they have the largest
churoh building.
The larger portion of Smith's congre-1
gation was muoh devoted to him, but
when the facts in regard to his in-1
fant child were brought to the knowl-1
edge of the members they immediately I
demanded an investigation and In the
meantime BBked him to suspend his I

When the crowd became seated inlof erecting said bridge
the oourt bouse the Mayor read the
warrant of abandonment. Smith,
through his counsel, Simmons & Gibbs,
pleaded not guilty. J. E. O'Hara ap
peared for the prosecution.
Several witnesses were introduced on
both sides, .and the testimony in some
particulars was very conflicting. ' The
facts as admitted and proven are these:
On Tuesday night a male child was born
unto Smith; on Wednesday nignt It was
carried to James City and left Ott the
ground near the' door of a oolored
woman's house where it was found!
during the night or about day next
morning, and that it had not been
dressed, bnt was wrapped in some rags
or strips of olothi The woman took it
in, elotned it and is taking care 01 it.,
Smith admitted that the child found
in James City was hlv that he was in -
formed that his . none or some of his
family connections had made arrange -
ments for it to be carried there and left
with a relative,' and that during the
few days it had been there he had sent
$8.00 for its support. " . ; -
The nurse stated that Rev.- Smith
asked her ir sne could not una somei
one to take the child, and that he Would
