The headquarters of the Inter States Immigration Bureau, which embraces all the Southern States, will be located at Raleigh for the present. Charlotte Chronicle: Capt. Geo. Shannonhonse, con duo tor on the C. C, came m yesterday evening. He reports tremendous rains down the country. He says the water-courses are larger than he ever saw them. MoAlpin s bridge, 7 miles below Charlotte, which has been standing for years baa been washed away, as also numerous smaller bridges. Asbeville Journal: Gen. Thos. L. Clinginan was seen this morning con versing with his friends in a jovial and most pleasant manner, as though he was but a man of 40 years When we saluted him he remarked, "Well, my friend, this is my birthday; I am 77 years old." The many friends of the General are glad to see him enjoying such good health and spirits, and hope that he may live to enjoy iui.ny more birthdays. Wilmington Advertiser: There has been a company organized in the city to build a hotel on Ooean View near the Switchback station that will accommo date more than a thousand guests. The hotel will cost 875,000 and will be one of the largest in the South. $20,000 have already been subscribed, its erec tion will begin the 1st of October. It is anticipated that all the capital necces- sary can be secured at home, but if it cannot be done the projectors are as sured by northern parties that they will furnish all the capital wanted. Saoford Express: On last Thursday John Liwreoce and two other men were ploughing on the farms of J. E Yarboro and Thomas Buchanan, near Avent's Ferry in Chatham county. A thunder shower came over and the men went under a large tree standing near by for shelter, taking their horses with tlseiu. A flash of lightning struck the tree killing Mr. Lawrence instantly and seriously injuring the other two men. All of the horses were killed, Mr. Bu chaDan losing two and Mr. Yarhorough one. A colorod woman was killed by lightning in Jonesboro on tbo same day. Wilmington Star: The painful intel ligence of the death of Mrs. Monimia DaviB, wife of Hon. Geo Davis, was received hero yestorday. She died at Mt. Airy, N. C. The remains will reach here at 6 p m. today, and the funeral will take place at St. Paul's Episcopal Church st 0:20 this evening. Mrs. Davis was one of the gentlest and most lovable of women, and was held in universal esteem wherever known i The Burgaw and Onslow railroad people report progress. A number of Northern capitalists interested in the road made an inspection of the route last week, and were well pleased with the prospects. As a result of this visit, plans are now being, prepared for a hotel to cost $150,000, which it is pro posed to erect atSwansboro for a winter resort. Raleigh News and' Observer: The Southern Railway Passenger and Freight Agents' Association which has been in session in Ashoville several days, has adjourned. The old officers the association were unanimously re-elected, and the next regular session of the association will be held in At lanta. Oa., on the second Tuesday in July, 1800. We are glad to learn that our energetic and pushing townsman, Mr. John Y. MgcRae, whose business fell into arrears some months ago through crediting too largely, has been able to arrange his matters, and now opens again in his own name. The surveying corps of the Atlantio Coast Line will finish locating their line trom Greenville to this point in about tnree weeks, when, I learn, the road will then be let out by contract into sections. They are now running trains on that road within two miles of Green ville, and with fifteen days favorable weather they will be running them into Greenville. A site for their depot st this place has been laid oil in Miss Tif fany West's field a-, the bead of Caswell street. The rain continues and with it our farmers continue blue. The prospects for a crop this year, they say, are worse than they were iu I8ft7. when it was almost a failure. Toe Briery dude was in to see us a few days ago, and to my surprise he too was despondent. In view of tbe hard times that are coming, be said, our people must economize. "We must cut down expenses, and the lirst thing to do is to put a stop to the extravagant ideas of our girls, why, you often see girls who weigh less than a 100 lb. weight, wrapt up in as many yards of cloth. Yes, the proportion is a pound of flesh to a yard of cloth. You often see one dress made of three dis tinct bolts of cloth. If we can't put a stop to such foolishness in any other way, the next Legislature must pass a law making it a felony to wear a dress made of more than ten yards of cloth." Tbe dude seems to think if the girls would economize in their dress times would be better. I am somewhat dis posed to think that an improvement could be made with less money. During the month, Kinston socioty has displayed in great numbers the most uniformly handsome faces and forms she has ever seen. She has had acquisitions from nearly all the adjoin. ing counties and towns, and seemingly beauty has been concentrated to our town. We are afraid our young men do not fully appreciate the situation. They should exert themseves especially to make it as pleasant as possible for our visitors and not allow them an un pleasant moment during their stay among us. How little we know in our daily intercourse with the world the impression for good or evil that's being made upon those who come among uh from a distance. A certain responsi bility rests upon each individual in his or her circle of society as to tho senti ment which any visitor may hear away of the characteristics of the place and 10 some extent every visitor to one is the guest of all, and most naturally forms an opinion favorable or otherwise according to the cordiality which marks their reception Many things which wo take small accounts of among ourselves leavo their impress upon tho stranger, for the guest sees more in au hour than the host in a year. Be careful to enter tain strangers, does not necessarily con vey the idea of feasting them, but of giving them a kindly welcome, cordial greetings and pleasant receptions. Atlantic L N. 0.
