' la these dim galleries of the world, Where bite of buttered greatness lie, Xo I hero, with eyes long sealed, am I, With blackened Hps once proudly curled Bound down and swathed, who was a ' .. queen, Gazed Idly on by all who pass, All shrivelled, shrunk and put between These four walls of clear glass. Three thousand years Bin'ce that dark day, With sad chants flunr on the red air, When the great bull Agis bare Beyond the Western hills away That which ye coffined here "Whose coffin painted was, and sweet With perfumes spilling from the bier Of scents sewn in my sheet. Great pomp there was that buried me; The boat that carried me by night Was huug with trappings gold and white, Had muffled oars that dipped the sea, Broad oars that swung out rucasmedly, And swept by sileDt btate along Beucath its shadowed canopy, W'th souudiuf sullen song. With funeral jars and offerings Engraved with long forgotteu sijjns Put in stono with curious lines, And blazzoned with strange patterned things Like unto those that banded me Above the place where 1 was hid, Red painted on my canopy. Gold on my coffin lid. So to my sepulture 1 went, With dull-wiuged scarabol dried Laid in the hollow of my side, Fragrant with myrrhs and borrowed scent Hedged from Ambition's tireless strife, Out of the palaco put away, From languid loves too weary life, I, who was yesterday. I, who was, am not, yet shall be, Lie siraitly here, who reigned a queen, A handful of fine dust between Four walls of glass for all to sec, With bits of battered greatness near. Dwell on It, ve who idlv doss My body's shell uncoffiued here Behind these walls of glass. British Museum. Deraorcst's Magazine. Where every thingisexceptionally good, it is uinlcult to make a selec tion ol the very best; and this is the dilemma we nna ourselves con fronted with each mouth when onr favorite oeriodical, Demorest's Monthly Magazine, arrives. The October number ih bristling with good things. To start off with, the colored frontispiece, "The Wedding Trip," is a lovely picture in the samp Rtvlrt aa "A Vaphtino' Part-.c V . j given in the previous number, and follows naturally in sequence; for is not a yachting party often a fore runner of a wedding trip? In addition, there are nearly 150 other illustrations, including a very in teresting series showing various kinds of "Human Habitations." Then among the stories are one by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, and one ("The Little Rebel") about Abraham Lincoln, and one for "Our Girls," about "A Butteifly in Harness." Christine Terhune Herrick' defines in "A Bow of Kibbon" the mission and pphere of that decorative trifle; "The Chemistry of Cooking" is discussed in simple and intelligible language; aud "Malaria; Its Cause and Cure" furnishes numberless suggestions about that fell disease so prevalent at this season. Besides, there is a Supplement to the Fashion Department, embodying lots of ideas that will be of great assistance in planning the winter outfit. But every one needs to have this com prehensive Family Magazine, every month. It is published by W. Jennings Demorest, 15 East 14th Street, New York. How a Great Poet Was Killed. It was through the mistake of an eagle, that the great Greek tragic poet, iEschylus, came to his end at least bo his biographers tell us. He was in Sicily, on a visit with Hierd, whe was occupied in build ing a town at Etna then, and achy 1 us, to gratify his host, had just written' a play, called "The Etruscans,", in which he auguered erery thing auspicious for the new city. As he Was sitting oat in the fields, an eagle, mistaking bis bald head, for a rock, dropped npon it from a great: height a tortoise, the shell ot which he thus intended to orush. The blow killed the hapless poet, however. It is said that this event had been foretold in the fol lowing couplet : 'Thee, iEohyluB, a dart from heaven shall slay. Whin treacherous skies portend a fatal , -day. ; : V;.!.?a Another version 01 the prophecy is. that a soothsfiver- foretold that iscby las would -be JcuieaJ); tire fall of , a house;'- aud -that when taxed with5 his - false 5 prediction. auer ine poecs aeatn, ne aeienaea himself "by saying that the shell of a tortoise ia bat the honse in which thef animal I dwells la ttnoient times, as in modern, these astrolo gers generally left a loop-hole in their : predictions, ont of which to creep If hara present. - ; v 'fVv" '" i'1,.
