Notwithstanding the cry of "hard timet," there was a large number of visitors in the city yesterday, and tbe merchants were kept very busy. Henry W. Grady, a distinguished oitiien and editor of Atlanta, died Monday morning at hia home. Bis death will be universally regretted. There will he preaching at the M. E. Some of the finest cabbages we ever saw 'were at the green grocery stores on Middle street yesterday. They were soma of the fall crop raised by the truck farmers near the city. There will be services at tbe Baptist Mission station, Market dock, this even ins; at 8 o'olock. A cordial invitation is extended to all persons to be present and take part in the meeting. The registrars and judges of the elec tion meet Saturday to canvass the books.- If you wish to help do some thing for New Bene your name must be registered by Saturday, as the books will be closed that day. We saw at Mr. 0. E. Stover's store, yesterday, a branch of yellow jessa mins In full bloom. It was brought from the woods across Nense river, where it is said the vines are blooming as if it were springtime. In the city several persons have hyacinths, roses aid violetSyin bloom. The Jotjbnal force, from devil up, art out on a two days' furlough. Our employees have been very faithful during the put year and the few holi days they had were no more than they were, entitled to and they have been given this brief recreation wcloomely. The next number will oome out on Saturday. The' Journal tenders thanks to Mr. Jonathan Havens for a quantity of the most delicious pecans that ever blessed the. palate of man. They are from the branches of tbe wide-spreading pecan tree,in 'bli yard in this city. He has given away a greet many, and on yes israay-sold more than thirty dollars Worth. Think again. Tbe rtsurrectcd and glorified Saviour exclaims: verily 1 say unto you, in asmuch as je haye done it unto one of tbe least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." And again, "ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always." It is right that, in the precinots of family life, the light of the day should shine, but it would be perversive of the spirit of the gospel to close it in with the door that guards your home. Let words of cheer and tokens of love go forth to those who will not "recompense thee," (Luke 14: 13, 14), and "thou shalt be blessed and recompensed at the resur rection of the just." It is the disgraoe of the times that "Christmas gifts" are fast degenerating into a system of e.r change, subversive of the bletsed charity that abideth when the stars go out. "Nothing to give ?" No word of oheer; no smile of love; no deed of kindness done; no pure and heroic re solve breathed iato the ear of heaven ? Yes, yes I you have much to give ! Christmas! We desire to establish the fact that the construction of the New Berne and Oaslow R.ilrpad will act as an im prover in every way, and that its in fluence for good on the A. ft N. C. Railroad will be not inconsi Jer.blr. One of the draw backs to Morebead City as a summer retort is its remotness from principle lines of travel. It is a well known -fact that the votaries of fash id as well a. those seeking rest and recreation deeire change and varie ty, and one of tbe secrets of the success ful wa'ering places of the North is their coniigui y and acceesibiliiy, one to the other. If the peculiir features of me oi e begins to pill, ibty seek another, and each porseibinx its own local chirm or attention, lh tide is kept up between and all prosper. As .s well known our sitter city of Wil mington now possesses in its vicinity some very attractive eummir resorts, tint are largely pilromzid by the dwelU'isof ih Cape Fetr region, but who for novelty would gladly exchange for a time at l-iaac. the borne attractions for those winch 81 irchenQ possesses; the visitors to th'i latter place governed by the s inie it tl lenops and desires would reciprocate if fig interchange could lie made uuicklu and chetnnu. aud the proposed new road will afford just that opportunity: hence it ful owe, that a ball, or any unusual event occurring at either place would attract the patrons of the other, and the trip bt ing made in four or five hours the opportunity will be gladly and frtquently availed of and as a result, where theA.&N. C. Kiuroad has now one passenger over its entire length it would have twenty betwe.n Morehead and New Berne This is eo probable that it needs but to be suggested to be believed. Fo it is that, the faot bei.g admitted that New Berne and its public institu lionB being in sore need of something to revivify and bring them up com mercially, Is almost in self defence obliged to turn to this new road as a means of accomplishing this desired result. Can we not then for at least one time in our history come together and unite upon a measure that promises so much good and is the only thihg in sight that is calculated to help us. It is an unde niable fact that railroads properly managed are the life and vitality of a country, and the section that iB with out thorn is sure to be behind in tbe race for progress. Shall we come out of our Rip Van Winkle lethargy and range abreast with the times V Z. Death of Dr. J. D. King. The many friends the deceased made while "tenting': among us in Search of the health he had lost by overwork in bis profession, in trying to restore to health those who were stricken down by disease, will be pained to learn of the death of Dr. J.
