From Beaufort County.
The clever and enterprising Washing
ton Gazette talks like this:
Quite a large cumber of citizens
have assured us that they would furnish
us something to exhibit at the New
Borne. Fair. We want every lady, who
cud, to furnish some fancy work, pick
les, preserves, or something for orna
ment or usefulness for the occasion.
We want specimens of big ears of oorn,
big eom stalk, cotton stls, mechanical
artioles, blocks from large trees, and
indeed anything that will show up to
advantage our industries, enterprise,
and resources. Bring them in. and we
will take care of them and see that they
have good position in the Fair."
That's right. The people of Eastern
North Carolina should be interested in
our Fair, and we hope they will sub
stantially manifest It. Not only the

Wilson Advance: Io is with pleasure
that we send greeting to our sister to
bacco marketing towns and notify them
of the pleasant fact that our people are
going to establish a market here. Last
Monday night an informal meeting was
held in the omoe of A. b. Deans, Eeq.,
to consider the advisability of taking
steps to make Wilson one of tbe tobacco
markets of the State. It was decided
to build a tobacco warehouse for the
sale of leaf tobacco, and at once the
gentlemen present easily made up about
$2,UU0 worth of stock. It w proposed
to raise 210,000. rTheNew Berne Fair
will be opened on the 21th of February
by Gov. Fowle. We hope the good
people of that town may meet with un
limited success this year.
Charlotte News: One of the features
of the Coming 20th of May celebration
in Charlotte will be the presence of all
the fire companies belonging to the
state firemen's Association that was
organiztd in Raleigh last year. Seven
teen companies belong to this associa
tion and they will all be here ou the
20th of May. In addition to these, ar
rangements are being made to secure
the attendance of a number of com
panics from South Carolina, eo as
have a series of inter State races, in ad
dition to the annual convention of the
North Carolina Association. It will be
the greatest gathering of firemen ever
known in this State, perhaps the great
est ever held in the Southern 8tates
The firemen and their visiting friends
will make a regiment of a full one
thousand people. Another feature of
tbe 20th will be a grand reunion of ex
Confederate soldiers.

Yesterday afternoon a negro, foot sore
and limping from lameness, arrived in
Charlotte by the Air Line Road, having
walked every foot of the way from At
lanta, He was making his way back
to his old home at Wilson, N. C. He
gave hia name as George Newton, and
said that he left this State nine months
ago for Arkansas. A group of gravel
train banda were interviewing him
when a News reporter came up. George
was telling them a tale of woe. One-
third of the negroes who went out
there with him, he said, are dead. The
great trouble is to get drinking water.
He stood it as long as he could, and
then, failing to make money enough to
get him passage home, he boldly struck
out on foot. He left Arkansas on the
30th of last November. He got several
lifts on freight trains between there and
Atlanta, but he had walked the entire
dietanoe from Atlanta to Charlotte.
It is i a?y enough to get out there," ho
said, "but getting back home is a dif
ferent matter. You can't get any emi
grant agents to pay your fare back this
way, but you have to piy regular first
class rates. Hundreds of negroes would
come back today, if they could raise
the money." George says there is
great dissatisfaction among the ne
groes who have emigrated west, but
they are there and cannot help them
nelves. The railroad hands here gave
George a good supper and sent him on
bis way refreshed. Charlotte News.
