A handsome dwelling house is being erected on the lot on George street, near Pollock, for Mrs. W. H. Pennell, of Philadelphia. Mr. George Bishop is the contractor. Thero was a very slight fall of hail in the city yesterday. But few people oticed it. It was not a "drop in the bucket" to the "shower of ice" in Bal timore on Sunday afternoon. The walks on the Confedirate monument square in Cedar Grove Cemetery are being concreted. The Ladies1 Memorial Association is haviog the work done. It will add to the beauty of the square Mr. J. A. Simpson, the contractor, has nearly completed the neat residence for Mr. Perry on the corner of Middle and Johnston streets. Mr. W. M. Wat son, jr , has just placed lightning rods on it and says he guarantees its safety from lightning. Rev. Fred. D. Thomas received a oall to a pastorate in Springfield, Mo., and accepted. He left Hampden Sidney Theological Seminary about ten days ago to accept the call. Springfield is city of about 25 000 population. We are glad to know that Mr. Thomas, as young as he is, and so soon after enter ing the ministry, has rooeived this flattering call. It ia considered one of the best that has been received at the Seminary for sometime, by Dr. Moore, the president. The Washington Gazette of the 24th, publishes an interview with' Mr. Spencer Jones, who, it would seem, was delegated from Hyde county to go t) Coinjock as a special detective to learn about a quietly plated game by regular appointed patrolmen who had been entrusted to guarding the oyster interests of North Carolina. Can it be true that these men, in whom confidence had been imposed in en forcing the laws of North Carolina, have been unfaithful and disregard ful of all honor and integrity ? It is hoped not. It is to be regrotted by the people of this socticn that the Davis militny school ia to be removed from LaGrange. to Winston. Enterprising Winston Salem offered the proper inducements, though, and Col. Davis goes no doubt satisfied that he is taking a step that will be of grvat benefit to his school. Of course LaGrtnje, a small town, could not offer such financial induce ments as Winston Salem. LaGrange is an excellent location for a large eohool. It baa long 'been a school cen ter. and we hope that the Davis school will bo succeeded by an institution of equal merit and of equal benefit to the town. Mayoj'a Court. April 26 Bavou Sara dispatches furnish a detailed re port of the several great crevasses from the Mississippi flood, which shows that there has been great destruction of property and that a splendid section of oouLtry has been overflowed. The sto ries of Buffering and danger and loss of life have been greatly exaggerated, and the lots of stock is nothing like as great as has been reported. the Hoods in Texas have inflicted great damage throughout the north and west seotions. Railway washouts are reported in every direction, and many trains have been indefinitely aban doned. No loss of life is reported, but the damage to crops, railroad b and property is enormous, and will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Life of Jefferson l)avi$. Beai voir Hoube, March 22d, '90. dear sir: In answer to your en quiry I have to respond that the only biography or life o ex-President Davis of which I know anything personally, or in the preparation of which I have as sisted in any degree, is the one I am writing, The title is, "Ji fferson Davis, Ex President of the Confederate States, Memoir by his Wife," to be published by subscription by the Belford Pub lishing Company, 186 lSth street, New York city. If you will write to them they will give you all particulars. Bolieve, me ) ours respectfully. Mrs. Jefferson Davis. The above fao simile letter from Mrs Jefferson Davis speaks for itslf, and should put to rest, in the minds of all reasonable persons, the claims made by others that she is assisting in preparing another book than "Jefferson Davis Ex-President of the Confederate states A Memoir, by His Wife." ip28i&wlt. Horses were driven almost mad by the peltings of the hall. Thousands of window panes were broken, and many houses were unroofed by the storm. The dam age is estimated at$100.00J. The Balti more Herald says: "After the elements oeasod raging tho earth was covered at places an inch thick with the stones, which ranged in size from a quarter of an inch to an iuch and a half in thick ness."
